Now, a Task Force to compute timely employment data

May 19, 2017

The government has set up a high-level task force to compute timely data on employment situation in the country, a move that will help it frame policies and take steps to create jobs. "The task force will recommend solutions which can be implemented in a time bound manner," official think tank NITI Aayog. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed that this task be expedited so that policies on employment can be formulated with a proper appreciation of impacts, based on credible data, NITI Aayog vice chairman Arvind Panagariya will chair the task force that has labour secretary Sathiyavathy, statistics secretary TCA Ananth, NITI Aayog's Pulak Ghosh and Reserve Bank of India board member Manish Sabharwal as its members.

Labour bureau computes data only for eight sectors and that also comes with a lag. As a result, policy makers do not have a holistic view on the employment scenario in the country. And both policy making and analysis are conducted in a data vacuum. "In view of the importance of timely and reliable data on employment, the prime minister has directed the prime minister's office and concerned ministries to come up with a solution to fill this long standing gap in the country's statistical architecture,".

Know More-

  • India suffers from a lack of reliable, timely data on employment, which has made it difficult for policy makers and independent observers to assess the extent of employment generation at different points of time. Some employment data is collected and published by certain agencies, including the labour bureau, but the coverage is very small.

  • The National Institution for Transforming India(NITI Aayog) is a Government of India policy think-tank established by the Narendra Modi government to replace the Planning Commission which followed the top-down model. The stated aim for NITI Aayog's creation is to foster involvement and participation in the economic policy-making process by the State Governments of India. The emphasis is on bottom-up approach and make the country to move towards cooperative federalism.
