16th India–Japan Annual Summit

Context:

  • The 16th India–Japan Annual Summit was held in New Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of Japan participated in bilateral talks.

Key Highlights:

  • Date & Venue: 1–3 July 2026, New Delhi
  • First Visit of the Japanese Prime Minister: This was Sanae Takaichi's first official visit to India after assuming office as Prime Minister.
  • Partnership: The two countries reviewed the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
  • Total Outcomes: The summit produced 16 major outcomes, including 1 Joint Declaration, 2 Joint Statements, 6 Memorandums of Cooperation (MoC), 5 Memorandums of Understanding (MoU), 1 Exchange of Letters, and 1 commemorative initiative.

6 MoC on Battery Cooperation Promote battery projects and develop secure, resilient, and sustainable battery supply chains.
7 MoC on Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Strengthen pharmaceutical supply chains, including APIs and KSMs, through investment and technical cooperation.
8 MoC on Geology and Mineral Exploration Promote exploration of critical minerals and exchange geological expertise.
9 IndiaAI Mission–METI Agreement Foster AI projects, B2B partnerships, webinars, and access to computing resources.
10 Next Generation Mobility Partnership (NGMP) Promote cooperation in railways, roads, automobiles, aviation, shipbuilding, logistics, and urban development under the "Make in India for the World" initiative.
11 C-CAMP–RIKEN MoU Promote deep-tech, life sciences, healthcare, agriculture, environmental research, and startup innovation.
12 NCBS-TIFR–RIKEN MoU Strengthen collaboration in fundamental biology and neuroscience research.
13 IIT Bombay–BharatGen–NII MoU Advance joint research on Large Language Models (LLMs) with enhanced scientific reasoning capabilities.
14 Sarvam AI–Preferred Networks MoU Promote cooperation across the AI technology stack, including foundation models.
15 NIXI–JPNIC MoU Strengthen cooperation in IPv6 adoption, internet security, capacity building, internet governance, and professional exchanges.
16 Exchange of Letters between IFSCA and JFSA Establish cooperation in financial regulation, supervision, FinTech, RegTech, and exchange of best practices.

  • Highest Peak: Mount Fuji – an active volcano located on Honshu Island.
  • Ring of Fire: Japan is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki (World War II):

  • 6 August 1945: The "Little Boy" uranium bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
  • 9 August 1945: The "Fat Man" plutonium bomb was dropped on Nagasaki.

Evolution of India–Japan Diplomatic Relations:

  • 1952: Establishment of official diplomatic relations.
  • 2000: Bilateral ties upgraded to a Global Partnership.
  • 2006: Launch of the Annual Summit Mechanism.
  • 2011: Signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
  • 2014: Relations upgraded to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
  • 2025 (Vision): Adoption of the "Japan–India Vision 2025 for Peace and Prosperity in the Indo-Pacific."
