GI Tags to 11 Traditional Products of Jharkhand

Mon 15 Jun, 2026

  • The conferment of Geographical Indication (GI) tags to 11 traditional products of Jharkhand marks a major milestone in preserving and promoting the state’s rich tribal, cultural, and artisanal heritage. This recognition strengthens the identity of Jharkhand as a hub of traditional crafts, textiles, and indigenous food products.
  • The GI-tagged products include Bhoya Saree and Fabric, Kuchai Silk Saree, Kesaria Kalakand, Dokra Craft, Tumka Chadar, Baroni Paintings, Munda Jewellery, Jharkhand Bamboo Craft, Tussar Silk and Sarees, Jadopatia Painting, and Pancho Saree and Fabric. These products represent centuries-old craftsmanship and traditional knowledge preserved by local communities.

About Products

  • Among these, Dokra Craft is one of the most iconic tribal art forms of Jharkhand. It uses the ancient lost-wax metal casting technique, practiced mainly by tribal artisans to create decorative and ritualistic objects. This art form reflects the deep metallurgical knowledge of indigenous communities.
  • Jadopatia Painting, associated primarily with the Santhal tribe, is another culturally significant GI product. It is a narrative folk painting tradition that depicts mythology, folklore, social customs, and moral teachings through scroll-like illustrations. The recognition of this art helps preserve one of India’s unique tribal storytelling traditions.
  • Jharkhand’s textile heritage is strongly represented through Bhoya Saree, Kuchai Silk Saree, Pancho Saree, Tumka Chadar, and Tussar Silk products. In particular, Tussar Silk has long been associated with Jharkhand due to the state’s favorable forest ecosystem for silkworm rearing. The silk industry supports thousands of rural households, especially women engaged in weaving and cocoon processing.
  • The GI recognition of Munda Jewellery highlights the traditional ornamentation culture of the Munda tribe, where jewellery serves not only aesthetic purposes but also reflects tribal identity and social customs. Similarly, Jharkhand Bamboo Craft showcases eco-friendly craftsmanship and sustainable use of forest resources.
  • In the food category, Kesaria Kalakand has emerged as an important GI-tagged product. Its unique taste, texture, and traditional preparation method give it a distinctive regional identity and strengthen Jharkhand’s culinary heritage.
  • The economic impact of these GI tags is expected to be significant. GI certification enhances product authenticity, increases consumer trust, and enables producers to command premium market prices. For Jharkhand, where tribal and rural livelihoods form a crucial part of the economy, this recognition can boost employment generation, handicraft exports, rural entrepreneurship, and tourism.

Importance

  • Beyond economics, GI tags provide cultural preservation. In an era of globalization and mass production, traditional products often face imitation and market dilution. GI recognition protects these indigenous creations from unauthorized replication while ensuring that the benefits reach the original producer communities.
  • For Jharkhand, these 11 GI tags represent more than legal recognition—they symbolize the safeguarding of traditional wisdom, tribal identity, and cultural pride. This development is expected to strengthen the state’s brand image, promote sustainable livelihoods, and position Jharkhand as an important center of India’s indigenous craftsmanship.
