Chinese President Xi Jinping visited North Korea

- Chinese President Xi Jinping undertook a two-day state visit to Pyongyang, North Korea, from June 8–9, 2026, marking his first visit to the country in seven years and his first overseas trip of the year.
Strategic Pledges and Cooperation
- "New Historical Starting Point": Marking the 65th anniversary of the 1961 China–North Korea Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance (China’s only active mutual defense pact), both leaders declared that bilateral ties have entered a new era.
- Expanded Collaboration: President Xi stated China's willingness to significantly boost strategic coordination and expand practical cooperation in commerce, trade, agriculture, technology, and defense infrastructure.
- Omission of Denuclearisation: Observers noted that public readouts completely omitted any mention of the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. This underscores a structural shift where Beijing increasingly treats Pyongyang as a strategic asset to buffer regional U.S. alliances.
