National News

Launch of the country's seventh Regional Meteorological Centre

  • Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated the country's seventh Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Jammu.

Key Facts:

  • Regional Jurisdiction: This new centre will cater to the meteorological requirements of the Himalayan states/Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh.
  • Reorganization: Until now, weather services for these regions were managed by the RMC based in New Delhi. This bifurcation will improve the accuracy of local forecasts.

India Meteorological Department (IMD):

  • Establishment: Established on January 15, 1875.
  • Headquarters: Currently located in New Delhi (Mausam Bhawan).
  • Current Director General (DG): Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
  • 6 other Regional Meteorological Centres (RMCs): New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Nagpur, Guwahati.
  • The IMD is one of the six 'Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres' of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). It is also responsible for naming cyclones in the North Indian Ocean region (Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea).
  • Mission Mausam: Launched on the occasion of the 150th Foundation Day (January 2025), with the aim of making India "weather-ready."

Ladakh's First Model Border Village

  • Chumur village in Ladakh has been designated as the Union Territory's first model border village.
  • The foundation stone for this significant project was laid by Ladakh's Lieutenant Governor, Vinai Kumar Saxena, in June 2026.

Key Facts:

  • Altitude and Location: Situated in the Changthang region of Eastern Ladakh, this village lies at an extreme altitude of 16,700 feet above sea level, right next to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
  • This model village is being developed under the Central Government's flagship scheme, the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP).
  • First Phase: In the first phase of this program, a total of 10 border villages in Ladakh will be developed as model villages, starting with Chumur.

Ladakh:

  • Known as the 'Land of High Passes'.
  • India's northernmost and largest Union Territory (by area); established on October 31, 2019.
  • Capital: Leh is the capital and largest city of Ladakh.
  • Boundaries: It is bordered by Tibet (China) to the east, Himachal Pradesh to the south, and Jammu & Kashmir to the west.

  • Cultural Heritage: Key landmarks include Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, and famous Buddhist monasteries such as Hemis, Thiksey, and Alchi.
  • Astronomy: The Dark Sky Reserve located at Hanle is one of the world's highest sites for astronomical observation. Major Festivals: Hemis Tsechu, Losar (Tibetan New Year), and the Sindhu Darshan Festival are the main attractions here.
  • Local Cuisine: Thukpa, momos, and a local salty tea known as 'Noon Chai' or 'Gur-Gur Chai' (butter tea) are very popular here.
  • Language: Ladakhi, Bhoti, Purgi, and Hindi are primarily spoken here.
  • First Petroglyph Conservation Park: The foundation stone for India's first Petroglyph Conservation Park was laid on April 19, 2026, at the Indus Ghat in Leh. Its objective is to preserve centuries-old rock carvings.
  • Shyok Tunnel: The 920-meter-long Shyok Tunnel on the Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldi road—which is of immense strategic importance—was inaugurated in December 2025.

India's First Private University to Establish an IndiaAI Data Lab

  • Chandigarh University has become the first private university in India to establish an IndiaAI Data Lab in collaboration with Intel India.

Key Facts:

  • Objective: To equip students with industry-relevant practical skills in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, Machine Learning (ML), and emerging technologies.
  • Collaboration: This lab is the result of nearly three years of continuous planning and collaboration between Chandigarh University and Intel India.

The Country's Foreign Exchange Reserves

  • The country's foreign exchange reserves rose by $938 million to reach $682.32 billion for the week ended May 28.

The Country's 100th Ramsar Site

  • The Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, has been declared the country's 100th Ramsar site.
