National News

India's First 'Microsoft GenAI' and 'Google Agentic' Campus

  • GLA University, located in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, has become India's first 'Microsoft GenAI' and 'Google Agentic' campus.
  • GLA University has entered into a strategic partnership with Microsoft and Google Cloud to foster education, research, and innovation.

PM SVANidhi Scheme Completes 6 Years

  • Launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on June 1, 2020, the PM SVANidhi scheme completed six years on June 1, 2026.

PM SVANidhi (PM Street Vendor's AtmaNirbhar Nidhi):

  • Launch: June 1, 2020, to revive the livelihoods of street vendors during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Scheme Type: Central Sector Scheme.
  • Nodal Ministry: This scheme is now being jointly administered by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and the Department of Financial Services (DFS).
  • Technical Partner: SIDBI (Small Industries Development Bank of India) serves as the technical partner for the implementation of this scheme.

Revised Loan Structure:

First Tranche:

  • Previous Loan Amount: ₹10,000
  • Revised Loan Amount: Up to ₹15,000
  • Repayment Tenure: 12 months

Second Tranche:

  • Previous Loan Amount: ₹20,000
  • Revised Loan Amount: Up to ₹25,000
  • Repayment Tenure: 18 months

Third Tranche:

  • Previous Loan Amount: ₹50,000
  • Revised Loan Amount: ₹50,000 (No change has been made to this amount)
  • Repayment Tenure: 36 months
  • Since the inception of the scheme, more than 1.12 crore (11.2 million) loans have been disbursed to date.

Agreement for Kazakhstan's First Nuclear Power Plant

  • Russia and Kazakhstan have signed a historic agreement worth $16.5 billion for the construction of Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant.

Key Facts:

  • Estimated Cost: The total cost of this mega-project is estimated at approximately $16.5 billion.
  • Financing: Russia will finance approximately 85% of this project through a long-term Russian 'export credit.'
  • Financial Support: A portion of the cost will be covered by Moscow (Russia) through a substantial export credit.
  • Lead Contractor: Russia's state-owned nuclear energy corporation, Rosatom, will lead this project.
  • Start of Construction: Major construction work is expected to commence in 2027.
  • Commissioning (Operations): The goal is to have the plant's first reactor operational by early 2034.
  • Kazakhstan's Global Standing: The world's largest uranium-producing nation.

India-Oman CEPA Comes into Force

  • The India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) came into effect on June 1, 2026.

Key Facts:

  • This is the fifth Free Trade Agreement (FTA) implemented during the tenure of the Modi government since 2014.
  • Prior to this, trade agreements were concluded with Mauritius (April 2021), the United Arab Emirates (May 2022), Australia (December 2022), and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA—comprising Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway—in October 2025).
  • India has also concluded agreements with the United Kingdom (July 2025) and New Zealand (April 2026), and successfully concluded trade negotiations with the 27-nation European Union (EU) on January 27 of this year.
  • During 2025-26, total trade reached US$ 11.18 billion, up from US$ 10.61 billion in 2024-25.
  • India's exports stood at US$ 4.02 billion, while the value of imports from Oman was US$ 7.16 billion.
  • This agreement opens up 100% duty-free market access for Indian exports to Oman, covering 98.08% of Oman's tariff lines, which accounts for 99.38% of the trade value (based on the average for 2022-23).

Social Media Ban for Children Under 16 in Malaysia

  • To ensure the online safety of children, the Malaysian government has officially implemented a ban—effective June 1, 2026—on the creation and use of social media accounts by children under the age of 16.

Key Facts:

  • Objective: To protect children from harmful content, cyberbullying, and elements that encourage excessive usage.
  • Effective Date: June 1, 2026.
  • Under this regulation, social media platforms with at least 8 million users are required to implement an age verification system.
  • Companies that fail to comply with these regulations may face fines of up to 10 million Ringgit.
  • Australia: The first country in the world to impose a complete ban on social media for children under the age of 16.
  • Spain: The first European country to impose restrictions on children under the age of 16.
  • United Kingdom (UK): Has adopted strict regulations through its Online Safety Act to protect children under the age of 18 from harmful content.
  • Indonesia: The first country in Southeast Asia to restrict social media usage for children under the age of 16.
  • In India as well, states such as Karnataka are considering similar regulations to ensure the safety of children.

'President's Police Colour'

  • The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, presented the 'President's Police Colour' (President's Police Flag/Emblem) to the Sikkim Police.
