India-Italy Joint Declaration

Context :

  • India and Italy upgraded their bilateral relations to a “Strategic Partnership”.

Key Points :

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Italy on an official visit from 19-20 May 2026 at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
  • This visit followed Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Italy for the G7 Summit in June 2024 and Prime Minister Meloni’s visit to India for the G20 Summit in 2023.
  • Both countries agreed to further develop the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and increase bilateral trade to 20 billion Euros by 2029.

Major Outcomes of the India-Italy Bilateral Meeting :

  • Strategic Partnership: Bilateral relations between the two countries were elevated to the highest level.
  • Trade Target: A target of 20 billion Euros in bilateral trade by 2029 was set.
  • Defence Industrial Roadmap: Agreement on co-development and co-production of naval systems, helicopters, and electronic warfare systems.
  • Innovation Hub: Launch of the “INNOVIT India” initiative to promote startups and technology cooperation.
  • Critical Minerals: Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed for cooperation in secure and resilient supply chains of critical minerals.
  • “Culture and Tourism Year”: Both leaders announced that 2027 would be celebrated as the “India-Italy Culture and Tourism Year”.

India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and Italy’s Role :

  • Structure (Corridors): It consists of two parts: the Eastern Corridor (connecting India with the Arabian Gulf) and the Northern Corridor (connecting the Arabian Gulf with Europe).
  • Components: It includes rail links, shipping networks, electricity cables, hydrogen pipelines, and high-speed data cables.
  • Italy’s Position: After exiting China’s BRI (Belt and Road Initiative), Italy positioned itself as the Western Anchor of IMEC. Italian ports such as Trieste and Genoa will become major gateways to Europe.
  • Transport Benefits: The corridor will reduce logistics costs by 30% and transportation time by up to 40% between India and Europe.

Agricola Medal :

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honoured with the ‘Agricola Medal’ by the Food and Agriculture Organization in Italy.
  • This award is the highest honour conferred by the Director-General of FAO upon global leaders who have shown remarkable commitment and effective efforts towards eradicating hunger and poverty and achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • FAO praised India’s farmer-centric policies and initiatives, particularly highlighting the world’s largest food-based social security programme covering 800 million people and the provision of direct income support to more than 110 million farmers through the PM-KISAN scheme.

Italy :

  • Officially known as the Italian Republic, it is a country in south-central Europe with a rich cultural and historical heritage.
  • It is a founding and major member of the European Union (EU) and NATO.
  • Location: The country is located in southern Europe in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea as a “boot-shaped” peninsula.
  • Borders: To the north lie the Alps Mountains, where it shares borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia.
  • Seas: The Adriatic Sea lies to the east, the Ionian Sea to the south, and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west.
  • Islands: The two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea—Sicily and Sardinia—are part of Italy.
  • Enclaves: The world’s two smallest independent countries, Vatican City and San Marino, are completely surrounded by Italy.
  • Major Rivers and Mountains: The Po is the longest river in Italy. Apart from the Alps, the Apennine mountain range stretches from north to south like the backbone of the country. Active volcanoes such as Mount Etna and Mount Vesuvius are also located here.
  • Capital: Rome, also known as the “Eternal City”.
  • Prime Minister: The real head of government who leads the executive branch.
  • Parliament: Italy has a bicameral parliament consisting of the Senate (Upper House) and the Chamber of Deputies (Lower House).
  • Currency: Euro (€)

India-Italy Relations :

  • Italy is India’s fourth-largest trading partner within the European Union (EU).
  • India-Italy bilateral trade stood at 13.76 billion US dollars in 2024-25.
  • India maintained a trade surplus of 1.70 billion US dollars.
  • Italy ranked 19th in cumulative FDI inflows into India from April 2000 to March 2025.
  • Italian investments are mainly concentrated in the automobile, trade, and industrial machinery sectors.
  • Italy announced 470 million Euros in new investments and a 500 million Euro financing facility through SIMEST.
  • Regular PASSEX naval exercises are conducted between the two countries, and Italy also participates in the MILAN naval exercise.
  • Space cooperation between Indian Space Research Organisation and the Italian Space Agency (ASI) is ongoing.
  • India and Italy are also cooperating in the fields of counter-terrorism and cyber security.
