Prime Minister’s seven appeals for economic self-reliance

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to adopt "responsible economic habits" to strengthen India's resilience against the global economic fallout of the West Asia crisis.
  • In Hyderabad, the PM also inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for development projects worth over ₹9,400 crore, including the Sindhu Hospital and the Zaheerabad Industrial Area.

Key Aspects of the Appeal in Hyderabad:

  • Fuel Conservation: PM Modi asked citizens to use petrol and diesel sparingly, suggesting carpooling, metro travel, and maximizing the use of electric vehicles.
  • Economic Self-Reliance: Citizens were urged to reduce unnecessary foreign spending, including limiting foreign vacations and weddings for one year to protect foreign exchange reserves.
  • Support for National Security: The Prime Minister emphasized that in times of crisis, patriotism involves living responsibly and supporting national interests.
  • Work-from-Home: He advised adopting work-from-home and virtual meetings to reduce dependency on fuel, similar to systems used during the pandemic.

Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less toll collection system

  • Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less toll system at the Mundka-Bakkarwala Toll Plaza in Delhi.
  • This is the first barrier-less toll plaza in the Delhi-NCR region and the second in India, following the launch of the country’s first such system in Gujarat earlier this month.

  • India and Trinidad and Tobago signed eight agreements in sectors including tourism, healthcare, infrastructure and Ayurveda during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s two-day visit to the Caribbean nation in May 2026.

RBI and ECB signed MoU to boost central banking cooperation

  • On the sidelines of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) meetings in Basel, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the European Central Bank (ECB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing cooperation in the field of central banking.
  • The MoU updates the earlier agreement signed in 2015 and establishes a framework for regular exchange of information, policy dialogue, and technical cooperation between the two central banks in areas of mutual interest.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI)

  • Establishment: Established on April 1, 1935, under the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, based on the Hilton Young Commission recommendations.
  • Nationalization: Nationalized on January 1, 1949.
  • Headquarters: Mumbai (Moved from Kolkata in 1937).
  • Functions:
    • Bank of Issue: Issues currency notes (except ₹1 and coins, issued by the Ministry of Finance).
    • Banker to Government: Manages government deposits and debt.

PM Narendra Modi visited Prabhas Patan during Somnath Amrit Parv

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Prabhas Patan in Gujarat to participate in the celebrations of Somnath Amrit Parv.
  • This event marks a dual milestone: the 75th anniversary of the temple's restoration and inauguration by India's first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, in 1951, and 1,000 years since the first recorded attack on the shrine in 1026.

Prabhas Patan

  • It is the site of the legendary Somnath Temple, considered the first among the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva.
  • Known as a Triveni Sangam (confluence) of three rivers: Kapila, Hiran, and Saraswati.
  • The current Somnath Temple is built in the Maru-Gurjara style, also known as the Chalukya or Solanki style of architecture.

India-Australia Virtual talks on COP 31

  • Indian Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav held a virtual meeting from New Delhi with his Australian counterpart, Chris Bowen, the Minister for Climate and Energy.

Highlights of the Meeting

  • India's Commitment: India remains dedicated to global climate solutions, citing the country's enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for the 2031–35 period recently submitted to the UNFCCC.
  • COP 31 Leadership Roles: While Türkiye is set to host the COP 31 summit in 2026, Chris Bowen has been designated to lead the negotiations as the "President of Negotiations".
  • Negotiation Focus: The ministers are expected to facilitate critical tracks such as technology transfer and implementation, building on mandates from previous global stocktakes.
  • Pacific Inclusion: As part of the lead-up to COP 31, a pre-summit meeting is planned to be held in the Pacific region (specifically Fiji) to ensure the voices of island nations are prioritised in the final negotiations.

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

  • Adopted: May 9, 1992, at the UN Headquarters in New York.
  • Opened for Signature: June 1992, at the Rio Earth Summit (United Nations Conference on Environment and Development) in Brazil.
  • Entry into Force: March 21, 1994.
  • Membership: Near-universal ratification with 198 parties (197 states + European Union).

  • Conference of the Parties (COP): The supreme decision-making body of the UNFCCC. It meets annually (except in 2020) to review progress.

India ranked 3rd globally in installed renewable energy capacity

  • According to a new report by Morgan Stanley, India ranked 3rd globally in installed renewable energy capacity.
  • According to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, domestic solar module capacity has nearly doubled, from 38 gigawatts in March 2024 to 74 gigawatts in March 2025. Solar cell capacity has also increased from 9 gigawatts to 25 gigawatts.

Two cheetahs into the wild at Kuno National Park

  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav released two cheetahs (identified as CCV-2 and CCV-3) into the wild at Kuno National Park.
  • This event marks a significant milestone in Project Cheetah, the world's first intercontinental large wild carnivore translocation project.

IOS Sagar

  • Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) Sagar (Indian Naval Ship Sunayana) departed from Chattogram following a successful port call marked by diplomatic engagements, professional exchanges and joint maritime exercises with the Bangladesh Navy (BN).
  • After leaving the harbour, IOS Sagar conducted a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with the Bangladesh Navy ship BNS Prottoy and naval air assets.
