National News

Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana

  • The State Health Agency of Tripura has been recognised as the best small state for expeditious settlement of suspicious claims, achieving the fastest turnaround time during the financial year 2025-26 under Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and the Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana.
  • The honor was conferred during a two-day national Chintan Shivir organized by the National Health Authority (NHA) in Pune, Maharashtra

Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana

  • Launched: September 23, 2018
  • Nodal Agency: The National Health Authority (NHA) is responsible for implementing the scheme at the national level.
  • Funding: Shared between the Centre and States (typically 60:40 for states, 90:10 for NE/Himalayan states, and 100% Central for UTs without legislature).

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility is primarily based on the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011 data.

  • Rural Areas: Households meeting specific deprivation criteria such as living in a single room with kucha walls/roof, having no adult members (16–59 years), or being landless manual labourers.
  • Urban Areas: 11 occupational categories including ragpickers, beggars, domestic workers, street vendors, and construction workers.
  • Automatic Inclusion: Includes households without shelter, destitute/living on alms, manual scavengers, and primitive tribal groups.
  • Senior Citizen Coverage (70+): In late 2024, the scheme was expanded to cover all senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of socio-economic status. These beneficiaries receive a distinct Ayushman Vay Vandana Card.
  • ASHA & Anganwadi Workers: In March 2024, the scheme was extended to include families of ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, and helpers.

The Four Pillars of Ayushman Bharat:

  • Ayushman Arogya Mandir (formerly Health and Wellness Centres) for primary care.
  • PM-JAY for secondary and tertiary care.
  • Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) for digital health infrastructure.
  • PM-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) for strengthening health systems.

South Korean President’s Visit to India

  • South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and First Lady Kim Hea Kyung received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • South Korean President Lee Jae-myung is on a three-day state visit to India (April 19–21, 2026), the first by a South Korean leader in over eight years.

OCI expansion for Indian-origin Tamils in Sri Lanka

  • During a historic two-day visit to Colombo, Vice President CP Radhakrishnan announced that the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card scheme will be extended to the sixth generation of Indian-origin Tamils in Sri Lanka.
  • This major policy shift addresses a long-standing request from the diaspora, as eligibility was previously limited to the fourth generation.
  • This marks the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian Vice President to Sri Lanka. During the trip, Mr. Radhakrishnan held talks with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya to further strengthen bilateral ties under India's "Neighbourhood First" policy.

  • Fishermen Dispute: Palk Bay dispute involves Indian fishermen crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) into Sri Lankan waters, leading to arrests and confiscation of boats.

Basava Jayanti

  • Homage was to Jagadguru Basaveshwara on the occasion of Basava Jayanthi which is a significant festival celebrating the birth anniversary of 12th-century philosopher-social reformer Basavanna, the founder of Lingayatism.
  • Primarily celebrated in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh in April/May (Vaisakha month), it honours his advocacy for equality, social justice, and Vachana literature.

Life and Philosophy of Basavanna

  • Founder of Lingayatism: He introduced the concept of the Ishtalinga, a personal linga worn on the body to symbolize a direct connection with the divine.
  • Vachanas: His teachings were spread through poetic compositions called Vachanas, which used simple language to convey complex spiritual and social ideas.
  • Anubhava Mantapa: He established this "Hall of Spiritual Experience," often cited as one of the world's first parliaments, where people of all backgrounds and genders could debate spiritual and social issues.
  • Famous Maxim: He is well-known for the philosophy of "Kayakave Kailasa" (Work is Worship), emphasizing that manual labor is a spiritual path.

  • The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises has trained over 2,500 beneficiaries in the use of artificial intelligence tools under the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana.

Vishwa Sutra

  • The Ministry of Textiles has launched an initiative called ‘Vishwa Sutra – Weaves of India for the World’. A designer collection based on the initiative was presented at the 61st Femina Miss India held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
  • The initiative has been developed by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) in collaboration with the National Institute of Fashion Technology.

India’s first advanced 3D glass substrate packaging facility

  • Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw laid the foundation stone for India’s first advanced 3D glass substrate packaging facility at Info Valley in Bhubaneswar.
  • The facility, to be set up by 3D Glass Solutions, will manufacture cutting-edge glass substrate technologies, a first of its kind in the country.

“Uttar-Poorv Janjatiya Basant Utsav”

  • The 1st edition of the "Uttar-Poorv Janjatiya Basant Utsav" (North East Tribal Spring Festival) was Organized by the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC) under the Ministry of Culture Guwahati.
  • The festival served as a platform to celebrate the arrival of spring and the diverse tribal heritage of the North Eastern region.

G20 satellite

  • According to ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan, G20 satellite, designed to study climate and air pollution and monitor weather, is expected to be launched in 2027.
  • Proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during India's G20 presidency in 2023, the mission is designed to provide shared, real-time data on climate change and environmental challenges to all G20 nations, with a particular focus on supporting the Global South.

Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR

  • IOS SAGAR departed from Phuket after successful three-day Operational Turnaround.
  • This marks the successful culmination of her second port call during the ongoing deployment. Defence Ministry said that IOS SAGAR undertook a series of professional, strategic and cultural engagements with the Royal Thai Navy, significantly strengthening bilateral naval cooperation.
