Formation of AIGEG

  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has constituted the "AI Governance and Economic Group" (AIGEG).
  • This is a high-level inter-ministerial body responsible for the regulation, policy development, and coordination of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the country.

Composition of AIGEG:

  • Chairperson: The Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology (currently Ashwini Vaishnaw) will serve as its Chairperson.
  • Vice-Chairperson: The Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology (currently Jitin Prasada) will serve as its Vice-Chairperson.
  • Member-Convener: The Secretary to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will steer the operations and coordination of this group.
  • Support Committee: To assist this group, a Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC) will be constituted to provide advice on global developments and emerging risks.
  • Apex Institutional Mechanism: It will function as the country's apex body for AI governance policy development and inter-ministerial coordination in India.

India's First Chip Fabrication Plant

  • The Central Government has formally approved a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for India's first chip fabrication (manufacturing) plant in Dholera, Gujarat.
  • This project will span 66.16 hectares with an investment of approximately ₹91,000 crore, and is expected to generate over 21,000 direct and indirect jobs.

  • This decision was taken under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and repeals the Meghalaya State Language Act, 2005.
