Delhi–Dehradun Expressway Inauguration

Context :

  • Narendra Modi inaugurated the Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor (Delhi–Dehradun Expressway) in Dehradun on April 14, 2026.

Key Points :

  • The project is designed to improve travel efficiency between Delhi and Dehradun.
  • It is also recognized as an environmentally sensitive infrastructure model, integrating wildlife conservation features into highway development.

Economic and Social Impact :

  • Reduction in logistics cost: Transportation of goods will become cheaper and faster, boosting trade.
  • Boost to tourism: Enhances connectivity to Haridwar (51 km away), Rishikesh, and the Char Dham Yatra.
  • Employment generation: Creates job opportunities during construction and operation.
  • Fuel savings: Reduced distance and time will lower petrol and diesel consumption.

Key Features of the Project :

  • Total cost: ₹12,000 crore
  • Length & structure: 213 km long, six-lane access-controlled expressway
  • Travel time: Travel time between Delhi and Dehradun will be reduced by nearly half
  • Provides seamless connectivity across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand
  • Includes 10 interchanges, 3 railway overbridges (ROB), 4 major bridges, and 12 wayside amenities
  • Features a 12 km long wildlife elevated corridor (one of the longest in Asia)
  • Includes 8 animal passages, two 200 m long elephant underpasses, and a 370 m tunnel near Dat Kali Temple
  • Improves access to Char Dham, Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Mussoorie boosting tourism
  • Promotes industrial growth in Baghpat, Shamli, and Saharanpur
  • Supports Saharanpur’s wood carving and Muzaffarnagar’s paper industries
  • Noise barriers: Special sound barriers and light control systems installed for wildlife protection

  • PM Gati Shakti is a National Master Plan launched in October 2021 for integrated planning and implementation of infrastructure projects.
  • Its main objective is to reduce logistics costs and make the Indian economy globally competitive.
