National News

President Launches Four Major Women-Centric Schemes

  • President Draupadi Murmu launched four major women-centric schemes of the Delhi government during the "Empowered Women, Prosperous Delhi" program held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.

Related Facts:

  • Saheli Pink Smart Card: This is a pink card under the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) framework, which provides free travel to eligible women and transgender residents on DTC buses. This card can also be used for payment-based travel on the Metro and RRTS.
  • Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana: This is a restructured and upgraded version of the old 'Laadli Yojana' of 2008. It aims to provide a total of ₹56,000 in installments to daughters from economically weaker families (annual income up to ₹1.20 lakh) until they complete their graduation or diploma, which, with interest, will exceed ₹1 lakh by the age of 21.
  • Free LPG Cylinder Scheme: Under this scheme, two free LPG cylinders will be provided to ration card-holding families in Delhi every year on the occasion of Holi and Diwali. A budget of approximately ₹129 crore has been allocated for this, and the benefits will be transferred directly to the beneficiaries' accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
  • Meri Punji Mera Adhikaar: Under this initiative, pending dues of the Ladli Scheme have been settled. During the event, the President transferred over ₹100 crore to the bank accounts of 40,642 eligible girls through DBT.
  • The event, organised to mark the completion of one year of the BJP government in Delhi, was also attended by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.

'Operation Crackdown' Launched

  • The Telangana Police launched 'Operation Crackdown' with the aim of rooting out the cybercrime ecosystem.

Talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Mark Carney

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held delegation-level talks.
  • This is Mark Carney's first official visit to India as Prime Minister, having succeeded Justin Trudeau in March 2025.
  • The Canadian Prime Minister is on an official visit to India from February 27 to March 2, 2026, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

  • Trade Goal: The two leaders set an ambitious target of doubling bilateral goods and services trade to US$50 billion by 2030.

61st Session of the UNHRC

  • At the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk praised India's vibrant civil society.
  • He said it is playing a vital role in upholding India's democratic traditions and the rights of minorities.
  • Türk strongly criticized the worrying human rights situation in Pakistan and China.

UNHRC:

  • India's gross GST collections in February 2026 increased by 8.1% compared to the same period last year to over ₹1.83 lakh crore.

Remains of a Yadava Period Temple-Style Stone Pillar

  • These remains, depicting artistic carvings on black basalt stone and the "Hemadpanti" style, highlight the region's rich medieval history and art.

Yadav Dynasty:

  • Origin: Also known as 'Seuna', they considered themselves descendants of Lord Krishna and Yaduvanshi.
  • Reign: 12th to 14th centuries, their rule extended from the Tungabhadra to the Narmada River.
  • Capital: Devagiri (present-day Daulatabad, Maharashtra)
  • Independence: Initially, they were vassals of the Western Chalukyas, but around 1187 AD, Bhillama V declared independence and established a sovereign state.

Prominent Rulers:

  • Simhana II: The most powerful king of this dynasty. During his reign, the empire stretched from the Narmada River to the Tungabhadra River.
  • Ramachandra Dev: It was during his reign, in 1294 AD, that Alauddin Khilji launched the first attack on Devagiri.
  • Rise of the Marathi Language: The Yadavas adopted Marathi as their official language. During this period, the great saint Dnyaneshwar composed the "Dnyaneshwari."
  • Music and Science: Sharngdev, the author of the famous music book 'Sangeet Ratnakar' and the great mathematician Bhaskaracharya were patronized by this dynasty.
  • Hemadri: Was the minister of King Mahadev and Ramachandra, who composed important texts like 'Chaturvarga Chintamani' and promoted the 'Hemadpanti' style.

Smew Duck

  • The rare Smew Duck has been sighted for the first time during the 7th Waterbird Census in Kaziranga National Park, Assam.
  • The Smew (Mergellus albellus), a migratory bird from the Eurasian taiga region, has been sighted in the Kaziranga landscape for the first time.

7th Waterbird Census:

  • Council Statistics: The census recorded 105,540 waterbirds from 107 species, a decrease of 6,522 waterbirds and 17 species compared to the 2025 target.
  • Important Wetland 'Hotspot': Romari Beel recorded the highest number (15,661 birds) and highest diversity (77 species), reaffirming the resilience of the floodplain.
  • Presence of Threatened Species: This census recorded 18 species listed as Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable, or Near Threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Smew Duck (Mergellus albellus):

  • Characteristics: The male Smew has a black and white body, while the female has a mottled brown body.
  • Habitat: It prefers sheltered, fish-rich freshwater lakes and wetlands during winter.
  • Conservation in India: It is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, which protects migratory birds and their habitats.
  • This rare duck was spotted in the Rowmari-Donduwa beels in the Laokhowa buffer zone of Kaziranga.

New Guinness World Record for Planting Trees

  • Residents of Sujabad Domri in Varanasi set a new Guinness World Record by planting 251,446 trees in one hour.
