Science and Technology

A New Role for Beta-2 Microglobulin Discovered

  • Researchers at IIT Jodhpur have discovered a new role for a human protein called beta-2 microglobulin (β2m), which helps fight infection by destroying the biofilm (protective shield) of bacteria.

Related Facts:

  • This research has been published in the prestigious international journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), USA.

What is a Biofilm?:

  • When we think of bacteria, we often picture them as solitary floating cells. But in reality, many bacteria clump together to form a strong layer called a biofilm.
  • This biofilm is a kind of microscopic "shield" made up of proteins, sugars, and DNA. It protects bacteria from external attacks.
  • Bacteria in biofilms can be up to 1,000 times more antibiotic resistant than normal bacteria.
  • Biofilms are commonly found in: catheters, artificial heart valves, bone implants, and chronic, non-healing wounds.
