First Port to Launch an Anti-Drone Security System

Context:

  • The V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port), located at Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) in Tamil Nadu, has become India’s first port to initiate the implementation of an advanced anti-drone security system.

Key Points:

  • Advanced Technology: The system is an integrated solution combining Radio Frequency (RF) and radar-based drone detection and jamming systems.
  • Security Coverage: Provides 360-degree coverage with omnidirectional security.
  • Operational Range: Capable of detecting, tracking, and neutralizing unauthorized drones up to a range of 5 kilometers.
  • Collaboration: For implementation of this project, the port authority has signed an agreement with Central Electronics Limited (CEL), a Government of India enterprise.
  • Key Components: Includes drone detectors, detection radar, and man-pack jammers, enabling tracking and neutralization of suspicious drones.

V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port Authority:

  • Former Name: Tuticorin Port Trust (Renamed in 2011 after renowned freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaranar)
  • Location: Thoothukudi (Tuticorin), Tamil Nadu
  • Geographical Position: Strategically located on the south-eastern coast of India, along the Gulf of Mannar
  • Major Port Status: Declared India’s 10th Major Port on 11 July 1974
  • Green Hydrogen Milestone: In September 2025, India’s first port-based Green Hydrogen Pilot Project was inaugurated at VOC Port, making it the first port in India to produce green hydrogen.
  • Current Status: One of India’s 13 Major Ports and a leading maritime hub in South India.
