National News

9th edition of Pariksha Pe Charcha

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with over 4.5 crore students, teachers, and parents during the 9th edition of “Pariksha Pe Charcha”.
  • For the first time, the event was conducted simultaneously from five locations, including the PM’s residence in Delhi and regional centres in Coimbatore, Guwahati, Raipur, and Devmogra.

About Pariksha Pe Charcha

  • Inception: Launched in 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • Primary Objective: To reduce exam-related stress and foster a celebratory approach ("Utsav") toward learning.
  • Nodal Ministry: Organized by the Ministry of Education.
  • Target Audience: Students (Classes 6–12), teachers, and parents from India and abroad.

Farmer Identification Cards (Farmer IDs)

  • Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan confirmed that over 8 crore 47 lakh (84.7 million) Farmer Identification Cards (Farmer IDs) have been issued across India.
  • This initiative is a core part of the Digital Agriculture Mission (AgriStack), which aims to create a unique digital identity for every farmer to streamline access to benefits like PM-KISAN, crop insurance, and agricultural credit.

Three Pillars of the Mission

1.AgriStack: A farmer-centric DPI comprising three foundational registries created and maintained by States/UTs:

  • Farmers’ Registry: Assigns a unique Farmer ID (similar to Aadhaar) to each farmer.
  • Geo-referenced Village Maps: Links geographic information with land records to map land parcel boundaries.
  • Crop Sown Registry: Records real-time details of crops planted through mobile-based Digital Crop Surveys.

2. Krishi Decision Support System (Krishi-DSS): A geospatial system integrating satellite, weather, soil, and water data to help in crop mapping, disaster monitoring (droughts/floods), and yield estimation.

3. Soil Profile Maps: Envisages detailed mapping of 142 million hectares of agricultural land at a 1:10,000 scale to promote precision agriculture.

Mobile phone ban in Himachal Pradesh

  • Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that students will be prohibited from using mobile phones in all government and private schools across the State, beginning March 1, 2026.
  • The announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the 69th National School Games Under-19 Girls Handball Tournament in Bilaspur district.

US President announced new website

  • President Donald Trump officially launched TrumpRx.gov, a federal website designed to provide Americans with significant discounts on brand-name prescription medications.

“Pitch Perfect Australia-India: Perfect Conditions for a $100 Billion Partnership”

  • The India–Australia Business Case Studies Compendium, titled "Pitch Perfect Australia-India: Perfect Conditions for a $100 Billion Partnership", was officially launched at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), Delhi Campus.
  • This publication was jointly developed by IIFT and the Newland Global Group to document the real-world market-entry and growth strategies of 30 successful organisations operating across both nations.
  • Commerce Secretary Shri Rajesh Agrawal noted that the studies provide empirical evidence of how the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) is translating into real business opportunities.

24th Indo-US Joint Technical Group Plenary Meeting

International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

  • Observed annually on February 6, the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a United Nations-sponsored awareness day dedicated to the global eradication of this harmful practice.
  • Theme: "Towards 2030: No End to FGM Without Sustained Commitment and Investment".
  • The 2026 campaign emphasizes that achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5.3 target of eliminating FGM by 2030 requires urgent, long-term financial investment and unwavering political will.
  • The day was first introduced in 2003 by Stella Obasanjo, the First Lady of Nigeria, and later officially designated by the UN General Assembly in 2012 via Resolution A/RES/67/146.

ECONOMY & BANKING

6th and final bi-monthly policy review for the 2025-26 fiscal year

  • The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) unanimously decided to keep the benchmark repo rate unchanged at 5.25%.

Policy Rates & Stance

  • Repo Rate: Remained at 5.25%.
  • Policy Stance: Maintained as "Neutral".
  • Supporting Rates: The SDF (Standing Deposit Facility) rate remains at 5.00%, while the MSF (Marginal Standing Facility) and Bank Rate stayed at 5.50%.

Economic Outlook

  • GDP Growth: The real GDP growth projection for FY26 was revised slightly upward to 7.4% (from 7.3%). Projections for Q1 and Q2 FY27 are 6.9% and 7%, respectively.
  • Inflation (CPI): Projected at 2.1% for the current fiscal year (FY26). Near-term projections for Q1 and Q2 FY27 were revised slightly upward to 4.0% and 4.2%, primarily due to rising gold and silver prices.

New Initiatives & Measures

  • Fraud Compensation: Proposed a framework to compensate customers up to ₹25,000 for losses in small-value fraudulent transactions.
  • MSME Support: The limit for collateral-free loans to MSMEs was doubled to ₹20 lakh.
  • REITs: Banks are now allowed to lend directly to Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) to facilitate capital raising in the sector.
  • Customer Protection: Plans to issue draft guidelines regarding loan recovery agents and mis-selling by lenders.

About Monetary Policy Committee (MPC)

  • A statutory, empowered body constituted by the Central Government under Section 45ZB of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Act, 1934.
  • Establishment: June 27, 2016, following amendments to the RBI Act by the Finance Act, 2016.
  • Recommendation: Based on the Urjit Patel Committee recommendations.
  • Primary Objective: To maintain price stability while keeping in mind the objective of growth. It determines the policy repo rate required to achieve the inflation target.
  • Binding Nature: The decisions of the MPC are binding on the RBI.
  • The MPC is required to meet at least four times in a year. It typically meets bi-monthly.

Global Teacher Prize 2026

  • Indian educator and artist Rouble Nagi won the $1 million “Global Teacher Prize 2026” t the World Governments Summit in Dubai.
  • She was recognized for transforming neglected walls in slums and rural areas into interactive murals that teach literacy, mathematics, science, and hygiene to children who often lack access to formal classrooms.

Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF)

  • Establishment: ANRF was established through the ANRF Act, 2023, with its provisions coming into force on 5 February 2024.
  • Objective: It serves as the apex body to provide high-level strategic direction for research, innovation, and entrepreneurship across natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences.
  • Leadership: The foundation is currently led by Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman, who serves as the CEO.

Welfare schemes for Border Security Force

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched six new welfare schemes for Border Security Force (BSF) personnel during his visit to forward areas along the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • These new measures join existing BSF welfare initiatives such as the Ayushman CAPF healthcare scheme, E-Housing portal for residential allotment, and the Prime Minister's Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) for the children of personnel.
