National News

'My Bharat Budget Quest 2026' Launched

  • The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, launched 'My Bharat Budget Quest 2026'.
  • This is a nationwide initiative aimed at engaging young people with the intricacies of the Union Budget 2026 and deepening their understanding of budgetary provisions.

Pennaiyar River Water Sharing Dispute

  • The Supreme Court directed the central government to constitute a tribunal to resolve the pending dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the sharing of Pennaiyar river water.
  • The Tamil Nadu government had filed a case in 2018 challenging the check dams and diversion works constructed by Karnataka on the Pennaiyar river.
  • Tamil Nadu argued that inter-state river water is a national asset and no single state can claim exclusive rights over it.

Pennaiyar (South Pinakini) River Water Sharing Dispute:

  • Dispute: Primarily between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka
  • Cause of the dispute: The dispute arose when Karnataka began constructing check dams and water diversion structures on the Markandeya river, a tributary of the Pennaiyar river.
  • Tamil Nadu's stance: Tamil Nadu approached the Supreme Court in 2018. The state argues that the construction of dams by Karnataka in the upper reaches of the river will reduce the water flow to the lower riparian areas (Tamil Nadu), affecting the interests of farmers and residents there.

Union Budget 2026-27

 

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget for the financial year 2026-27 on February 1, 2026.
  • This was her 9th consecutive budget, setting a new record in Indian history.

Union Budget 2026-27: Manufacturing, Infrastructure, and Job Creation

 

  • In the Union Budget 2026-27, manufacturing has been identified as one of the six priority areas under 'First Duty' (First Kartavya).
  • The government has focused on 7 strategic and emerging sectors to make India a global manufacturing hub.

Key Announcements and Allocations:

  • Launch of India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 2.0 announced
  • Electronic Components: The outlay for the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) has been increased from ₹22,919 crore to ₹40,000 crore.
  • Biopharma SHAKTI: A new scheme has been launched with an outlay of ₹10,000 crore to promote the domestic production of biologics and biosimilars.
  • Auto PLI: The allocation for the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for automobiles and auto components has been more than doubled to ₹5,940 crore.
  • White Goods (AC/LED): The PLI allocation for this sector has been increased from ₹304 crore to ₹1,004 crore.
  • Container Manufacturing: A new scheme has been announced with an allocation of ₹10,000 crore to make India globally competitive in container manufacturing.
  • Industrial Clusters: 200 old industrial clusters will be revitalized through technology and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Chemical Parks: 3 dedicated chemical parks will be established in collaboration with the states.
  • Rare Earth Corridors: Special corridors will be developed in Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu to promote mining and manufacturing of rare earth elements.

Direct flight service from Delhi to Shanghai

 

  • Air India resumed its direct flight service from Delhi to Shanghai on February 2nd, after a gap of nearly six years.
  • These services had been suspended in early 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent border tensions.

Allocation for the Health Sector in the Union Budget 2026-27

  • The Union Budget 2026-27 has allocated ₹1,60,000 crore for the health sector, which is approximately 10 percent higher than the revised estimates for the financial year 2025-26.

India's Real GDP Growth Rate

  • According to the Ministry of Finance, India's real GDP growth rate is projected to be 7.4% in 2025-26, while the nominal GDP is expected to grow at 8%.

16th Finance Commission Report Presented

Ministry of Defence in Budget 2026-27

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has allocated ₹7.85 lakh crore to the Ministry of Defence in the Union Budget 2026-27, the highest among all ministries.
  • According to the Ministry of Defence, this allocation represents two percent of the projected Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the next financial year and shows a significant increase of 15.19% compared to the budgetary estimates of 2025-26.
  • According to the ministry, the total defense budget constitutes 14.67% of the central government's expenditure. Of the total amount allocated to the ministry, 27.95% is for capital expenditure, 20.17% for revenue expenditure on maintenance and operational preparedness, 26.40% for revenue expenditure on salaries and allowances, 21.84% for defense pensions, and 3.64% for civilian organizations.
