77th Republic Day

Deployment of Humanoid Robot ‘ASC Arjun’: Indian Railways

  • Indian Railways has deployed a humanoid robot named ‘ASC Arjun’ at Visakhapatnam Railway Station to enhance passenger safety, security, and service delivery.
  • This humanoid robot is equipped with a Face Recognition System (FRS) for intrusion detection, AI-based crowd monitoring, and the ability to generate real-time alerts for RPF control rooms.
  • It can also make automated public announcements in English, Hindi, and Telugu, helping to increase safety awareness among passengers.

Bharat Parv 2026 Inaugurated

  • Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat inaugurated Bharat Parv 2026, a six-day national culture and tourism festival, at the Red Fort in New Delhi.

Uniform Civil Code Amendment Ordinance 2026: Uttarakhand

  • The Uttarakhand government officially implemented the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Amendment Ordinance 2026 on January 27, 2026.
  • Before the implementation of the UCC, marriages were registered under the Uttarakhand Compulsory Marriage Registration Act 2010. The entire process was offline.
  • Under the UCC, almost 100 percent of marriage registrations are now being done online.

Uniform Civil Code (UCC):

  • The Uniform Civil Code is mentioned in Article 44 of the Indian Constitution.
  • It is a part of the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP).
  • According to Article 44, "The State shall endeavor to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India."
  • It is noteworthy that the Directive Principles are not legally enforceable, but they guide the state in policy-making.

  • During the India-EU Summit, India and the European Union finalized the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on January 27, 2025.

Over 16,000 New Species Discovered Annually

  • According to a University of Arizona study (2015-2020 data), scientists are discovering more than 16,000 new species each year, the fastest rate ever recorded.
  • This includes over 10,000 animals (primarily insects), 2,500 plants, and 2,000 fungi.
  • This discovery rate is significantly higher than the approximately 10 species recorded as going extinct each year.

Discovery of the World's Oldest Cave Art

  • A hand stencil has been found in the Liang Metanduno cave on Muna Island, near Sulawesi, Indonesia, which is at least 67,800 years old.

  • This artwork was created by blowing red pigment onto a hand, leaving a negative imprint of the hand on the cave wall.
  • The fingertips in this stencil are deliberately pointed or tapered, possibly indicating a deep connection between humans and animals or having some symbolic meaning.

  • Previously, the record for the oldest cave art was held by a hand stencil from Spain, which was estimated to be around 66,700 years old.
