National News

Inauguration of ‘Granth Kutir’

  • President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated ‘Granth Kutir’ at Rashtrapati Bhavan, which houses approximately 50 manuscripts and 2,300 books in 11 Indian classical languages.
  • The collection includes works on subjects such as epics, philosophy, linguistics, history, governance, science, and religious literature, as well as the Constitution of India in these languages.

Eight Projects Inaugurated

  • Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia, inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for eight projects worth ₹365 crore in Tripura on January 23, 2026.
  • This includes the launch of five development projects worth ₹270 crore and the laying of the foundation stone for three projects worth ₹95 crore.

North Eastern Region:

  • It is called 'Ashtalakshmi' (group of eight states).
  • It comprises the Seven Sister states and one brother state (Sikkim): Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim.
  • Chicken's Neck: This narrow corridor connects the Northeast to the rest of India.
  • Borders: The region is surrounded by international borders (China, Myanmar, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Nepal), making it central to the 'Act East Policy'.
  • Major River: The Brahmaputra, known as 'Yarlung Tsangpo' in Tibet, is the lifeline of the region.
  • North Eastern Council (NEC): Headquartered in Shillong, it is the nodal agency for the economic and social development of these states.

Important Day

'National Girl Child Day'

  • National Girl Child Day is celebrated every year on January 24th across India to promote the empowerment of girls.

Related Facts:

  • Initiation: It was started in 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development to address serious issues such as child marriage and female feticide.

Major Initiatives for the Development of Girls:

  • "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" (BBBP): Launched in 2015, its main objective is to improve the sex ratio at birth, ensure education for girls, protect them from exploitation, and provide them with social and financial independence.
  • Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY): Launched on January 22, 2015, under the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign, it is a small savings scheme notified by the Government of India. Interest is paid on deposits at rates notified by the government from time to time, and the amount is paid according to the rules of the scheme. Currently, the interest rate under the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is 8.2%. Since its inception, more than 4.53 crore accounts have been opened, and the total deposits exceed Rs. 3.33 lakh crore (as of December 2025).
  • Mission Shakti: Launched by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2022 (effective from April 1, 2022) as an integrated umbrella scheme for the 15th Finance Commission period (2021–26), it has been allocated Rs. 3,150 crore in the Union Budget 2025–26.

It includes two major sub-schemes:

  • Sambal: (Focused on safety and security, including One Stop Centres, Women Helpline, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and Nari Adalats)
  • Samarthya: (Focused on empowerment, including Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, Palna, Shakti Sadan, Sakhi Niwas, and Sankalp Hub).
  • Samagra Shiksha: Launched by the Ministry of Education in 2018.
  • UDAAN: UDAAN is an innovative initiative launched in 2014 by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) under the guidance of the Ministry of Education.
  • Nurturing Aspirations of Young Adolescent Girls through Vocational Training (NAVYA): Launched on June 24, 2025, in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, NAVYA is a joint pilot initiative of the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE). It targets adolescent girls aged 16–18 years (at least Class 10 pass) in 27 aspirational and North-Eastern districts across 19 states.
  • According to the UDISE report, the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) for girls at the secondary level reached 80.2 percent during the period 2024–2025.
  • As of January 2026, a total of 2,153 child marriages have been prevented across the country, and 60,262 Child Marriage Prohibition Officers have been appointed.

  • The birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Karpoori Thakur is celebrated every year on January 24th. This year, his 101st birth anniversary was observed.

  • The Odisha government has imposed a complete ban on gutkha, paan masala, and all tobacco products.

  • Uttar Pradesh Day is celebrated every year on January 24th, the day in 1950 when the name of the 'United Provinces' was changed to Uttar Pradesh.

Growth in the Indian Textile Industry

  • The Indian textile industry has grown from ₹8.40 lakh crore in 2014 to approximately ₹16 lakh crore now.
  • The domestic market has grown from ₹6 lakh crore to ₹13 lakh crore by 2025.
  • Exports have increased by more than 25 percent.

India's Textile Sector:

  • Target: To become a $250 billion domestic market with $100 billion in exports by 2030

Current Contribution:

  • Contribution of the Indian textile industry to GDP – approximately 2%

  • India is the world's sixth-largest textile exporter
  • Recently, the Ministry of Textiles launched the District-based Textile Transformation Initiative, with the main objective of developing each district of India into an independent textile export hub.

"India Skills Accelerator"

  • The World Economic Forum (WEF) has commended the launch of the "India Skills Accelerator" in India, which strengthens the global network of 45 national accelerators.

5 Companies Selected in the Fourth Phase of the PLI Scheme

  • The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has selected 5 companies in the fourth phase of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for white goods (washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers, and air conditioners).
  • These companies have committed to investing ₹863 crore.

Relevant Facts:

  • These companies manufacture components for air conditioners.
  • They are expected to generate a total production of over ₹8,300 crore and create 1,799 additional direct jobs by the financial year 2027-28.
  • A total of 85 companies have been selected under the PLI scheme so far.
  • These companies are expected to invest ₹11,198 crore and achieve a cumulative production of ₹190,000 crore during the scheme period.

India's Foreign Exchange Reserves: January 2026

  • India's foreign exchange reserves rose to US$701.36 billion in the week ended January 16, 2026.

Current status of foreign exchange reserves (January 2026):

  • Total foreign exchange reserves: US$701 billion
  • Foreign currency assets (FCA): US$508.50 billion
  • Gold reserves: Over US$117.40 billion
