‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ (BBBP) Scheme completes 11 Years

Context:
- The ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP)’ scheme completed 11 years on 22 January 2026.
Key Features:
- Launch: 22 January 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Panipat, Haryana
- Implementation: Jointly implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), and Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD)
- Funding: 100% centrally sponsored scheme
- Strategies: Awareness campaigns, grassroots-level interventions, and participation of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs)
- Key Components: Sukanya Samriddhi Scheme (SSY) (girl child savings scheme) and other provisions under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP)
- It is a fully centrally funded scheme and is being implemented in all districts across the country
- The Government of West Bengal is not implementing this scheme
Objectives of the Scheme:
- Improvement in Child Sex Ratio (CSR): To prevent the decline in sex ratio and promote its improvement
- Protection and Survival of the Girl Child: To prevent sex-selective abortions and ensure the survival of the girl child
- Education and Empowerment: To ensure education of girls and empower them
Major Achievements:
- The latest report of the Health Management Information System (HMIS) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) indicates improving trends in the Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB)
- At the national level, the SRB increased from 918 per 1,000 in 2014–15 to 930 in 2023–24, reflecting a positive improvement of 12 points
- The Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of girls at the secondary level increased from 75.51% in 2014–15 to 78% in 2023–24, as per the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) data of the Ministry of Education
- According to HMIS data of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, institutional deliveries increased from 61% in 2014–15 to 97.3% in 2023–24
- First trimester antenatal care (ANC) registration increased from 61% in 2014–15 to 80.5% in 2023–24, as per HMIS data
