NATIONAL NEWS

Central Motor Vehicles (Second Amendment) Rules, 2026

  • The Central Motor Vehicles (Second Amendment) Rules, 2026, were notified by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) on January 14, 2026, to strengthen toll fee compliance on National Highways.
  • The rules introduce the term "Unpaid User Fee" for cases where a toll fee remains unpaid despite being recorded by Electronic Toll Collection infrastructure. To ensure compliance, several restrictions have been implemented.

One Station One Product scheme of Indian Railways

  • According to the Ministry of Railway Indian Railways’ One Station One Product (OSOP) scheme has expanded to over 2,000 railway stations, benefiting more than 1.32 lakh artisans, weavers, and small producers by providing them with direct market access to millions of railway passengers every day.

One Station One Product (OSOP)

  • The One Station One Product (OSOP) scheme is a major initiative by the Ministry of Railways, launched in March 2022.
  • It aims to transform railway stations into promotional and sales hubs for indigenous products, aligning with the government's "Vocal for Local" and "Atmanirbhar Bharat" visions.
  • Outlets showcase GI-tagged goods, handicrafts, textiles, traditional garments, and local agricultural produce (including millets).
  • Stalls are designed by the National Institute of Design (NID) to ensure uniformity and visibility across the network.

Maharashtra signed 19 MoUs at World Economic Forum in Davos

  • Maharashtra has signed 19 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), worth an unprecedented 14.50 lakh crore rupees, on the very first day of the World Economic Forum, being held at Davos.
  • The investments are aligned with the Viksit Maharashtra 2047 vision to transform the state into a $5 trillion economy.

Punjab's first-ever Dog Sanctuary

  • Punjab's first-ever Dog Sanctuary was inaugurated at the Haibowal Dairy Complex in Ludhiana.
  • This pilot project aims to reduce dog bite incidents in the city while providing humane shelter and medical care for stray dogs.

  • The India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) is the specialized training and resource arm of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
  • In 2026, India's Chief Election Commissioner is chairing the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) for the first time.

AI Impact Summit 2026

  • The India–AI Impact Summit 2026 will be held from February 16 to 20, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
  • It is notable as the first global AI summit to be hosted in the Global South.

Round Table Conference

  • India's Department of Fisheries organised a high-level Round Table Conference with Ambassadors and High Commissioners from 83 partner countries in New Delhi.
  • Chairperson of this Round Table Conference was Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Rajiv Ranjan Singh (alias Lalan Singh).

IMPORTANT DAYS

Statehood Day of Meghalaya, Tripura & Manipur

  • Meghalaya, Tripura, and Manipur celebrated their 54th Statehood Day on January 21.
  • All three states attained statehood under the North Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971, which came into effect on January 21, 1972.
  • Manipur: Formerly a princely state, it signed the Instrument of Accession in August 1947 and a Merger Agreement in September 1949. It was initially a "Part C" state and became a Union Territory in 1956 before receiving statehood in 1972. Notably, Manipur was the first part of India to hold elections based on universal adult franchise in 1948.
  • Tripura: Also a princely state, it merged with the Indian Union on October 15, 1949, through the efforts of Queen Kanchan Prabha Devi. Like Manipur, it transitioned from a "Part C" state to a Union Territory (1956) before full statehood in 1972.
  • Meghalaya: Unlike the others, Meghalaya was carved out of Assam. It first became an autonomous "sub-state" within Assam in 1970 under the Assam Reorganisation (Meghalaya) Act, 1969, before attaining full statehood in 1972.
  • Constitutional Basis: Reorganization is governed by Articles 2 and 3 of the Indian Constitution, which empower Parliament to form new states or alter boundaries.
  • North-Eastern Council (NEC): Established by a separate 1971 Act, this is a statutory advisory body for regional planning and development.
  • Sixth Schedule: Provides for Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in tribal areas to preserve indigenous culture and land rights, which is central to Meghalaya's administrative history.

Equity support to SIDBI

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the equity support of Rs.5,000 crore to Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI).

Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary
