53rd World Book Fair

  • Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will inaugurate the 53rd World Book Fair in New Delhi on 10 January 2026.

Successful ground test of scramjet engine

  • DRDO conducted successful ground test of cooled long-duration scramjet engine for hypersonic missile programme.
  • DRDO's Hyderabad-based laboratory, Defense Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), achieved a run time of more than 12 minutes in the state-of-the-art scramjet connect pipe test.
  • The hypersonic cruise missile is capable of flying at a speed of 6,100 kilometers per hour, five times the speed of sound.

Inauguration of Mobile Cancer Screening Unit 'Asha Van'

  • Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated a state-of-the-art mobile cancer screening unit called 'Asha Van' for early detection of cancer.

  • Objective: The primary goal of this van is to provide early detection and diagnosis of cancer in rural and remote areas that lack modern medical facilities.
  • Technical Features: This van is equipped with EVA-Pro diagnostics, mammography unit and specialist tele-consultation (tele-consultation) facilities
  • Screening capabilities: This mobile unit is capable of screening for 10 types of cancer at a single location, including lung, oral (mouth), blood, cervical, pancreatic, liver (liver), breast and prostate cancers.
  • Operation: This van has been donated by Jenburkt Pharmaceutical and will be managed by the Bhavnagar branch of the Indian Red Cross Society.

  • US president approves bill imposing 500% tariff on Russian oil trade.

Global Impact:

  • Impact on India: This could pose a difficult situation for India, which is currently buying huge amounts of oil from Russia at concessional rates. U.S. sanctions may increase pressure on payment systems (Payment Gateways) and shipping insurance.
  • Oil prices surge: Global benchmark Brent Crude prices are likely to rise after the announcement, which could lead to inflation around the world.
  • Supply chain changes: European and US markets will now turn more bullishly to the Middle East (OPEC countries) and other alternatives such as Venezuela.

GDP growth rate of India

  • India’s GDP growth rate could remain at 7.5% in the fiscal year 2025–26 (FY26), as estimated by SBI’s Economic Research Department.

  • The National Statistics Office (NSO) gave a growth figure of 7.4% in the first advance estimate of FY26, while the RBI estimate is 7.3%. SBI’s 7.5% estimate is within the range of historical deviation (20-30 basis points).
  • The second advance estimate will arrive on February 27, 2026.
  • Domestic demand, government capital expenditure, strengthening service sector and improving rural-urban consumption are the main drivers.
  • Gross value added (GVA) could rise by 7.3% and nominal GDP by 8%. The manufacturing and construction sectors will also contribute.

India's fifth airline

  • Akasa Air obtained full membership of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on January 9, 2026, making it India's fifth airline.
  • For this membership, the company successfully passed the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), the most rigorous global aviation safety standard.
  • Prior to this, Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet and Vistara are members of IATA.
  • Akasa Air now became part of this organization with 360+ member airlines, representing 80% of global air traffic.

Skydo gets license from RBI

  • Skydo received a Payment Aggregator-Cross Border (PA-CB) license from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
  • This Bengaluru-based fintech company will simplify regulatory-compliant international payment collection for Indian exporters, especially MSMEs and small businesses.
  • ​PA-CB license obtained under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, which ensures foreign exchange transactions, KYC compliance and FEMA regulations in cross-border payments.
  • Skydo will now provide faster settlements to Indian accounts by accepting local payments in 32+ currencies.

Hominin fossils

  • According to a research published in the journal Nature, scientists have determined the age of hominin fossils obtained from a cave in Morocco to be around 7,73,000 years.

  • Location: These fossils were found in the ‘Grotte à Hominidés’ (Grotte à Hominidés) cave of ‘Thomas Quarry-I’ located in Casablanca, Morocco.
  • Time period: The age of the fossils is estimated to be about 7,73,000 years, belonging to the Middle Pleistocene era
  • Magnetic encroachment (Magnetic Reversal): The researchers used the ‘Matuyama-Brunhes’ (Matuyama-Brunhes) boundary. About 7,73,000 years ago, the magnetic poles of the earth were switched. Traces of this change were found in the sediments of the cave, providing accurate evidence of the age of these fossils. Nature Journal Source
  • The remains of two adults and a child were found from the cave, including fragments of lower jaws (Mandibles), teeth and bones.
  • These fossils show a mixture of both primitive traits like Homo erectus and evolved traits like the ancestors of modern humans.

98th Oscar Awards

  • Five Indian films have joined the eligibility list for the Best Picture category of the 98th Oscar Awards (2026).

World Hindi Day

  • World Hindi Day is celebrated every year on 10th January in memory of the First World Hindi Conference held in Nagpur in 1975.
