National News

Inauguration of 184 New Varieties of 25 Crops

  • The Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, inaugurated 184 new varieties of 25 crops with improved quality, developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
  • On this occasion, he stated that India's rice production exceeded 150 million tonnes in 2025.

Foodgrain Production in 2025:

  • Total foodgrain production: 357.73 million tonnes
  • Kharif production (estimated): 173.33 million tonnes of foodgrain production is estimated for the Kharif season (2025-26).

Major Crops:

  • Rice: 150.18 million tonnes (record).
  • Wheat: 117.94 million tonnes (record).
  • Nutri-cereals/Coarse grains: 63.92 million tonnes (record)
  • Oilseeds: Total oilseed production was 42.98 million tonnes, with soybean and groundnut achieving record production.
  • Target: The total foodgrain production target for the Rabi season of 2025-26 has been set at 362.5 million tonnes.

The First Jallikattu of 2026

  • The first Jallikattu of 2026 in Tamil Nadu began on January 3, 2026 (Saturday) in Thachankurichi village of Pudukkottai district.

  • Significance: It marks the beginning of the Jallikattu season in the state and is an important part of Tamil Nadu's cultural tradition.
