PMMVY Completes 9 Years

Reference:

  • The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) completed 9 years on 1st January 2026. It was launched on 1st January 2017 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD).

Key Points:

  • It is a Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme.
  • Former Name: Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana (IGMSY)
  • Name Change: 2010
  • Renamed and Expanded: 2017
  • Implemented in accordance with provisions of the National Food Security Act, 2013
  • It is a maternity benefit-related program.
  • Implemented by: Ministry of Women and Child Development
  • A key component of the Government of India’s Mission Shakti for women empowerment.

Main Objectives of the Scheme:

  • Provide partial wage compensation to pregnant and lactating women so that they can take adequate rest before and after delivery.
  • Improve health and nutrition of mother and child.
  • Encourage utilization of health services (such as antenatal check-ups, vaccination).
  • Promote positive behavior towards girl children (additional benefit if the second child is a girl).

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Pregnant and lactating women aged 19 years or above.
  • First live child (or second child if it is a girl).
  • Women in regular employment under Central/State Government or PSU or those receiving similar benefits under other laws are ineligible.
  • Pregnancy must be on or after 1st January 2017.
  • In case of miscarriage/stillbirth, eligibility resumes for the next pregnancy.
  • Benefits & Installments (Under PMMVY 2.0, effective from April 2022):

For the first child: Total ₹5,000 in 2 installments:

  • First installment: ₹3,000 (after 6 months of pregnancy and completion of at least one ANC check-up)
  • Second installment: ₹2,000 (after delivery registration and vaccination of child at 14 weeks)
  • For the second child (if a girl): ₹6,000 in a single installment (after delivery and vaccination)
  • Additional JSY benefits may be available, bringing the total average benefit to ₹6,000
  • Benefits are transferred directly to bank/post office accounts via DBT
