Stay on Judgment Related to the Definition of the Aravalli Mountain Range: Supreme Court

  • The Supreme Court, on 29 December 2025, stayed its judgment delivered last month (20 November 2025) concerning the definition of the Aravalli mountain range.
  • The Court observed that there are still several “serious ambiguities” in the matter, which require a scientific resolution.

Main Cause of the Dispute: The “100-Metre Rule”

  • Height: Only those hills will be considered part of the ‘Aravalli’ whose height is 100 metres or more above the local ground level.
  • Distance: The distance between two hills should not be more than 500 metres.

Supreme Court's Latest Intervention (December 29, 2025):

  • A bench headed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Suryakant took suo motu cognizance and stayed this order.
  • The Aravalli mountain range spans four major states/union territories: Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat.

Aravalli Range:

  • Meaning: 'Aravalli' is a Sanskrit word meaning 'line of mountains'.
  • Region: It is located in northwestern India. It extends in a southwest direction from Gujarat (Palanpur) through Rajasthan and Haryana to Delhi.
  • Highest Peak: Guru Shikhar, in Mount Abu (Sirohi, Rajasthan), with an elevation of 1,722 meters (5,650 feet).

Journey Aboard INS Vagsheer: President Droupadi Murmu

  • President Droupadi Murmu, on 28 December 2025, undertook a journey aboard INS Vagsheer, an indigenous Kalvari-class submarine of the Indian Navy, at the Karwar Naval Base in Karnataka.

INS Vagsheer:

 

 

  • INS Vagsheer is the sixth and final Scorpene-class submarine constructed under Project-75 (P-75).
  • It is a diesel-electric attack submarine.
  • With the commissioning of INS Vagsheer, all six submarines of Project-75 are now part of the Indian Navy: INS Kalvari, INS Khanderi, INS Karanj, INS Vela, INS Vagir, and INS Vagsheer.

Viksit Bharat–Ji Ram Ji Act, 2025

  • According to estimates in an SBI research report, under the Viksit Bharat–Ji Ram Ji Act, 2025, States are likely to receive ₹17,000 crore more compared to the average allocation of the last seven years.

World’s First Hospital to Use the ITVISMA Vaccine

  • Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) in Abu Dhabi has become the world’s first hospital to use ITVISMA (onasemnogene abeparvovec) gene therapy for the treatment of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).
  • This is a single-dose gene therapy developed by Novartis, which targets the deficiency of the SMN1 gene in SMA patients above 2 years of age.
  • In the UAE, fast-track approval was granted on 25 November 2025, making it the first country after the United States to approve this therapy.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA):

 

  • Cause: It is caused by a deficiency or defect in the Survival Motor Neuron 1 (SMN1) gene.
  • Impact: The nerves in the spinal cord and brain gradually degenerate, leading to muscle weakness. Affected children face difficulties in sitting, walking, and even breathing and swallowing.
  • Types: SMA Type-1 is the most severe form and is found in infants.

Third Anniversary of the India–Australia ECTA

  • On the occasion of the third anniversary of the India–Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (Ind-Aus ECTA), Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, stated that from 1 January 2026, Australia will impose zero customs duty on 100% of India’s exports.

  • This is India’s first trade agreement under which a developed country has completely opened its market duty-free for 100% of Indian products.
  • Earlier, customs duties had already been eliminated on 98.3% of tariff lines, which will now increase to 100%.
  • In 2024–25, Indian exports to Australia increased by 8%.

India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Growth: ICRA

  • According to estimates by the rating agency ICRA, during the current financial year 2025–26, India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate is expected to be 7.4%, which is higher than the 6.5% growth recorded in the financial year 2024–25.
