National News

First Fully Digital Census of India

  • The Cabinet has approved a budget of ₹11,718.24 crore for India’s 16th Census (Census of India 2027), which will be the country’s first fully digital census.

Key Highlights of the 16th Census (2027):

  • The census will be conducted in two phases.
  • Phase I will begin in October 2026.
  • Phase II will begin in March 2027.
  • The first phase will be conducted in four regions: Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, and Jammu & Kashmir.
  • The census is conducted by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, which functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • The 2027 Census will be the 16th census since 1872 and the 8th census after Independence.
  • The Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India is Mr. Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan.
  • The government has decided to collect Census data, caste-based enumeration data, and National Population Register (NPR) data simultaneously during the upcoming census.

SHANTI BILL 2025

  • The Union Cabinet approved the SHANTI Bill, 2025 on 12 December 2025.
  • The Bill aims to facilitate limited participation of private companies in India’s nuclear energy sector, thereby accelerating progress towards the target of 100 GW nuclear power capacity by 2047.

  • The Bill proposes amendments to the civil nuclear liability framework, providing legal protection to operators and limiting the liability of equipment suppliers.

Vigyanika: Science Literature Festival 2025

  • Vigyanika: Science Literature Festival 2025 was organized in New Delhi as part of the India International Science Festival (IISF).

MoU between the Ministry of Communications and BSE

  • Selected postal employees will provide services to investors through this platform and facilitate mutual fund transactions, thereby improving access to financial services.

Approval of the Coal-Setu Policy

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (EAC-PM), chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the Coal-Setu Policy.
  • The policy has been introduced to ensure seamless, efficient, and transparent utilization of coal.

Main Objectives of the Policy:

  • To provide long-term coal linkages for industrial use and exports
  • To reduce dependence on imported coal
  • To promote Ease of Doing Business
  • To enable faster and more effective utilization of domestic coal reserves

Creation of the ‘Coal-Setu’ Window:

  • A new window/sub-sector has been added under the Non-Regulated Sector (NRS) Coal Linkage Policy, 2016
  • It allows allocation of coal linkages for any industrial use and export
  • Only designated end-users are permitted to participate; traders are not allowed

Auction-Based Allocation:

  • Long-term coal linkages will be allocated through a competitive auction process
  • The policy provides flexibility in coal usage based on demand
  • Linkage holders are allowed to export up to 50% of the coal through use across their group companies

Expected Impact:

  • The policy will help ensure a more reliable and sustainable coal supply within the country
  • It will strengthen energy security, encourage investment, and support industrial growth

Election Commission appoints observers in eight states

  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed Special Electoral Roll Observers in eight major states to monitor the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
  • The observers have been deployed in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan.
  • They will remain stationed in these states until the final publication of electoral rolls in February 2026.

Scheduled Tribe Status to 12 Communities: Sikkim

  • The Sikkim Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to 12 communities in the state.
  • The decision is based on the final report of the Sikkim State High-Level Committee (SSHLC), which will now be forwarded to the Central Government for further action.
  • The resolution includes the following 12 communities:
  • Bhujel, Gurung, Jogi, Khas, Kirat Rai, Kirat Dewan Yakhha, Majhi, Mangar, Newar, Sanyasi, Sunuwar (Mukhiya), and Thami.

Launch of the MahaCrimeOS AI Platform

  • Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella, along with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, launched the MahaCrimeOS AI platform in Mumbai on 12 December 2025.
  • This AI-driven system has been developed to accelerate cybercrime investigations. After a successful pilot in 23 police stations in Nagpur, the platform will be expanded to 1,100 police stations across the state.

Approval of FL-100 Headset: United States

  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the FL-100 headset, developed by Flow Neuroscience.
  • It is the first at-home, non-drug-based treatment for depression, which uses transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) technology to deliver a mild electrical current to the brain’s prefrontal cortex.
  • Sweden-based Flow Neuroscience plans to launch the device in the United States in the second quarter of 2026, available by prescription at a price range of USD 500–800.

Indefinite Restriction on Russian Assets in Europe

H3N2 Infection in Pakistan

  • Following the outbreak of H1N1, cases of influenza have increased sharply in Karachi due to H3N2 infection.
  • Children, the elderly, and pregnant women are the most affected groups.

About H3N2 Infection:

  • H3N2 infection is a type of Influenza A virus, often also known as Hong Kong Flu.
  • It is a seasonal flu that frequently causes severe respiratory illnesses.
  • Classification: H3N2 is one of several subtypes of the Influenza A virus. Influenza A viruses have two proteins on their surface: hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N).
  • Nomenclature: It includes H3 (the third hemagglutinin type) and N2 (the second neuraminidase type).
  • Nature: It is a human influenza virus that can also be found in pigs, which sometimes leads to it being confused with 'swine flu', although H1N1 is the more common subtype of swine flu.

United States Removes Alexandre de Moraes from Sanctions List

  • The United States has removed Alexandre de Moraes, a judge of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil, from its sanctions list.
  • He had earlier been placed under sanctions due to his role in leading legal proceedings against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
  • The decision was taken following a telephone conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025

  • The Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025 has been approved by the Union Cabinet. The Bill proposes to increase the limit of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the insurance sector from 74% to 100%.

  • The Bill introduces major reforms to the Insurance Act, 1938 and the IRDAI Act, 1999.

  • Increase in FDI: Raises the FDI cap in Indian insurance companies from 74% to 100%.
  • Composite Licensing: Permits insurance companies to offer both life and general insurance products under a single license.
  • Reduced Capital Requirements: Lowers the minimum capital norms for insurance and reinsurance companies.
  • Greater Flexibility for Agents: Allows insurance agents to sell products of multiple companies (earlier restricted to one life and one general insurer).

Approval for Developing "Digital Payment Intelligence Platform"

  • The State Bank of India (SBI) and Bank of Baroda have received approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to set up a Section 8 company to develop a Digital Payment Intelligence Platform.
  • The company will be named the Indian Digital Payment Intelligence Corporation (IDPIC), with both banks allowed to hold more than 30% stake each.

Increase in Minimum Support Price (MSP) for Copra

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for copra for the 2026 season.
  • To ensure profitable prices for farmers, the government had announced in the Union Budget 2018-19 that MSP for all mandated crops would be fixed at at least 1.5 times the average production cost across India.

  • For 2026, the MSP for Milling Copra has been set at ₹12,027 per quintal and for Ball Copra at ₹12,500 per quintal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commented on 12 December 2025 that the increase in MSP for 2026 will enhance farmers’ income and promote copra production.

“Best Bank in India”

  • Bank of Baroda has been named the “Best Bank in India” by the Financial Times publication, The Banker.

Chhattisgarh’s First Ramsar Site

  • The reservoir depends on rainwater and local streams and serves purposes of irrigation, water supply, and bird sanctuary.
  • Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai and Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap stated that this designation aligns with the “Anjor Vision 2047”, which aims to designate 20 wetlands as Ramsar sites by 2030.

Silisera Lake: India’s 96th Ramsar Site

  • The lake was constructed in 1845 by Maharaja Vinay Singh of Alwar. In 1844, the Maharaja also built a royal palace for his queen, Sheela, along the lake’s banks.

115 Years of the Poetry Collection "Savarkaranchi Kavita"

  • A ceremony was organized in Shrivijaypuram, Andaman & Nicobar Islands to mark the 115th anniversary of the poetry collection “Savarkaranchi Kavita” by freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
  • Savarkar composed several works during his imprisonment at the Cellular Jail (Kala Pani) in the Andamans, written in Marathi, Hindi, and Urdu.
  • Some of his notable poems, such as “Jai Ostute”, “Sagaras”, and “Chandrabhan Chandrabhan”, served as inspirational pieces for the Indian independence movement.
