20th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee (20.COM)

  • India is hosting, for the first time, the 20th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) from 8 to 13 December 2025 at the Red Fort, New Delhi.

Intergovernmental Committee's 20th Session (20.COM):

  • Chair: Vishal V. Sharma, India's Ambassador to UNESCO
  • Objective: To consider matters related to the safeguarding of ICH, include new elements in the list, and review reports from Member States.
  • Participation: More than 1,000 representatives, experts, and non-governmental organizations from over 180 countries.
  • This session will consider the nomination submitted for the inclusion of the Indian festival 'Diwali' in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
  • UNESCO adopted the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2003, which focuses on protecting oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, and crafts from the effects of globalization.
  • India ratified the Convention in 2005, and this session is taking place on its 20th anniversary.

Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2025

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu is hosting the grand finale of the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2025 – Software Edition for the second consecutive time, which is being held today, December 8-9, 2025.
  • This is the country's largest open innovation platform, powered by the Ministry of Education and AICTE, with 20 finalist teams competing on 4 major problem statements.

Telangana Rising Global Summit 2025

  • The Telangana Rising Global Summit 2025 is being held on 8–9 December 2025 at Bharat Future City (30,000 acres) located in Mucherla, Ranga Reddy district, near Hyderabad.
  • The State Government expects to sign investment Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) worth approximately ₹3 lakh crore with major national and international companies during the summit.

Telangana:

  • Formation: Formed on June 2, 2014, as the 29th state of India through the reorganization of Andhra Pradesh (now there are 28 states)
  • Capital: Hyderabad (initially a joint capital, now the sole capital of Telangana)

First Institution to Receive In-Principle Approval from RBI for Conversion into an SFB

  • Fino Payments Bank has become the first payments bank to receive in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for conversion into a Small Finance Bank (SFB).

Eligibility and Requirements:

  • Operating Period: The bank must have completed five years of successful operation as a payments bank (Fino commenced operations in 2017).
  • Regulatory Compliance: Must meet all other regulatory and financial conditions stipulated by the RBI.

Key Benefits after becoming an SFB:

  • Becoming an SFB will allow Fino to provide lending services (such as micro-loans up to ₹50,000, MSME secured loans), whereas payments banks could only accept deposits up to ₹2 lakh.
  • It will become the 12th SFB in the country, meeting the minimum capital requirement of ₹200 crore.

International news

Inauguration of India’s New Consulate in Shanghai

  • India inaugurated its new state-of-the-art Consulate building in Shanghai, China, on 7 December 2025, marking the first relocation in 32 years since 1992.
  • India’s Ambassador to China, Pradeep Kumar Rawat, inaugurated the building in the presence of Consul General Prateek Mathur, representatives of the Shanghai Municipal Government, members of the Indian business community, and 400+ guests.

Resumption of India–EU FTA Negotiations

  • India and the European Union (EU) formally resumed negotiations on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in New Delhi on 8 December 2025.

  • EU Ambassador to India, Hervé Delphin, while addressing the World Annual Conference 2025 in India, said that the current negotiations represent a fundamentally new phase, referring to them as “EU–India Free Trade Agreement Negotiations 2.0.”
  • The European Union is India’s largest trading partner, with bilateral goods trade reaching USD 137.5 billion in 2023–24.

Cyclone ‘Ditwah’

  • India has increased humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka to help it recover from the devastating impacts of Cyclone Ditwah, which struck the country on 28–29 November 2025, causing severe flooding, landslides, and widespread destruction.

Key Details:

  • The cyclone resulted in over 200–600 deaths, affected more than 9 lakh people, and led to the declaration of a state of emergency across the island nation.
  • As part of Operation Sagar Bandhu, a major relief consignment amounting to 300 metric tonnes of emergency supplies has been dispatched to Sri Lanka, complementing the 1,000-ton aid package sent by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

  • Renowned actor Kalyan Chattopadhyay passed away at the age of 82.
  • Born in 1942 in Berhampore, Murshidabad district of West Bengal, Mr. Chattopadhyay graduated from FTII, Pune.
  • He began his film career in 1968 with Tapan Sinha’s acclaimed film “Apanjan.”

Death of Architect Frank Gehry

  • Frank Gehry, the American revolutionary architect who gave modern architecture a new direction, has passed away at the age of 96.
  • Gehry was one of the most renowned architects of his era, best known for his iconic works such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the DZ Bank Building in Berlin.

ISSF Shooting World Cup Final 2025: Doha

  • At the ISSF Shooting World Cup Final 2025 held in Doha, Simranpreet Kaur Barar won the gold medal in the women’s 25-meter pistol final.
  • Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar won the silver medal in the men’s 50-meter three-position event, and Anish secured the silver medal in the men’s 25-meter rapid fire pistol event.

Squash World Cup 2025

  • India is hosting the Squash World Cup 2025 for the third consecutive time, taking place from 9–14 December 2025 at the SDAT Squash and Badminton Stadium, Chennai.
  • 12 countries including the host India, defending champion Egypt, Malaysia, and others are participating, with each team comprising 2 men and 2 women players. The tournament follows the 2023 format, featuring sudden-death tiebreaks at 6–6.

  • In 2023, Egypt defeated Malaysia to win the title, while India finished in third place.
  • Egypt is the most successful team in Squash World Cup history, having won two titles.
