IFFI–UNICEF Partnership

  • The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) has partnered with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to showcase films about children.
  • The 56th edition of IFFI 2025 is being held in Goa from 20 to 28 November 2025, showcasing over 240 films from 81 countries.

IAC-2025 Organisation

G20 Summit – Johannesburg (Short Notes)

  • PM Narendra Modi urged G20 nations to shift from profit-driven innovation to a model focused on humanity, equality, and global cooperation.

Key Announcements :

  • India will host an AI Impact Summit in February 2026 with the theme “Sarvajan Hitaya, Sarvajan Sukhaya”, inviting all G20 countries.
  • Theme of the Third Session “A Fair & Just Future for All: Critical Minerals, Decent Work, Artificial Intelligence.”

Marburg Virus Disease Outbreak

  • An outbreak of Marburg virus disease has occurred in Ethiopia, causing five deaths so far.
  • The Health Ministry reported the fatality rate is now 50%.

Marburg Virus Disease:

Member of the Ebola virus family; spreads from bats. Symptoms include high fever and severe headache. First identified: 1967, in a city in Germany.

Agreement to Reinvite Russia to the G-8 Group

  • Europe has agreed to reinvite Russia to the G-8 after a resolution of the Russia–Ukraine conflict.
  • This proposal to bring Russia back to the global economic group (G-8) is presented as an alternative to the U.S.-proposed Russia–Ukraine peace plan.
  • The proposal was prepared by the UK, Germany, and France.

G7 Group (Group of Seven):

  • Year: 1975
  • First meeting: Held in Rambouillet, France.
  • Objective: To address global economic crises and promote coordinated economic policies.
  • Current G7 members: Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
  • In 1998, the G7 was expanded to become the G8 with the addition of Russia.
  • But in 2014, following the annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, Russia was suspended, and the group returned to being the G7.

Forced Deportation of Afghan Refugees from Iran and Pakistan

  • Taliban Deputy Spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat shared a UNHCR report stating that over 11,000 Afghan refugees were forcibly deported from Iran and Pakistan in a single day.
  • Of those returning to Afghanistan, 2,287 refugees were transported to their homes, and 1,760 individuals received humanitarian assistance.

Indonesia Declared Polio-Free

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Indonesia polio-free.
  • The announcement was made after the end of the Type-2 poliovirus outbreak in the country.

Polio:

  • Affects: Nervous system
  • Causative agent: Infectious virus called poliovirus
  • Three serotypes of poliovirus: PV1, PV2, and PV3
  • Most affected: Mainly children under 5 years of age
  • Discoverer of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV): Dr. Jonas Salk
  • Discoverer of oral polio vaccine (OPV): Dr. Albert Sabin
  • Global Eradication Initiative (GPEI): Launched in 1988
  • Polio eradication in India:
  • Pulse Polio Vaccination Program launched: October 2, 1995
  • Objective: To provide the 'two drops of life' dose of oral polio vaccine (OPV) to all children under 5 years of age
  • Last case: Wild polio virus recorded in West Bengal on January 13, 2011

53rd Chief Justice : Justice Surya Kant

  • Justice Surya Kant took oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on 24 November 2025.
  • His tenure will continue till 9 February 2027 (about 15 months).

Chief Justice :

  • Eligibility: Must be an Indian citizen, must have been a High Court judge for 5 years, or a High Court advocate for 10 years, or a distinguished jurist in the opinion of the President
  • Article 124(2): Judges of the Supreme Court are appointed by the President
  • Appointment Process: Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) and convention

Javed Ashraf appointed as ITPO Chairman

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Javed Ashraf, a retired 1991-batch IFS officer, as the Chairman of the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO).
  • According to the Ministry of Personnel order, he has been appointed on a contract basis for two years from the date he assumes charge, or until further orders.

  • Lachit Divas is observed every year on 24 November to mark the birth anniversary of Lachit Borphukan, the brave Ahom commander of Assam, and to commemorate his victory in the Battle of Saraighat (1671).

First Warship of Mahe Class Inducted into the Navy

  • The Indian Navy has inducted the first anti-submarine Mahe-class warship INS Mahe at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.
  • It is a new-generation indigenous warship designed for operations in shallow waters.
  • It has been built by Cochin Shipyard Limited.
