Vice Presidential Election 2025

  • The Election Commission issued a notification on 7 August 2025 under Sections 4(1) and 4(4) of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, outlining the schedule for the Vice Presidential Election 2025, including the dates for nomination, scrutiny, withdrawal of candidature, and (if necessary) polling.

Vice Presidential Election:

  • Constitutional Provisions: Articles 63 to 71
  • Election Process: By all the members of both the Houses of Parliament (Lok Sabha + Rajya Sabha) by single transferable vote system
  • Tenure: 5 years
  • Re-election: May be

Qualification:

  • Citizen of India

  • Qualification to become a member of Rajya Sabha
  • Not holding any office of profit

Amendment to the Vegetable Oil Products, Production, and Availability Order, 2011

  • The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) has notified an amendment to the Vegetable Oil Products, Production, and Availability (Regulation) Order, 2011.
  • This order was originally issued under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and was formulated to replace older regulations after the implementation of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

  • The amendment incorporates institutional changes brought about by the merger of two major directorates in 2014 and also adds provisions of the Collection of Statistics Act, 2008, which will improve data collection and compliance.

Approval for the Construction of Mangaldoi-Mazikuchi Road

  • With the aim of promoting road infrastructure in the North Eastern Region, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) approved a project on 6 August 2025 for the construction of the Mangaldoi-Mazikuchi road in Assam, from km 11+000 to km 26+200.
  • The approved length of the road is 15 kilometres, and the total cost of the project is ₹45.31 crore.

North Eastern Region:

Coastal Shipping Bill, 2025 Passed

  • With the aim of boosting the country's coastal economy, Parliament has passed the Coastal Shipping Bill, 2025.
  • This Act highlights the potential of India’s strategic 11,098-kilometre-long coastline, which spans across nine coastal states and four Union Territories.

  • Presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the bill authorizes the state to spend ₹30,969 crore to meet its expenditure requirements during the current financial year.

First State to Appoint Sign Language Experts: Punjab
