National News

“Manthan Meeting” under the International Year of Cooperatives – 2025

  • On the occasion of the International Year of Cooperatives – 2025, Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah chaired the “Manthan Meeting” held in New Delhi.
  • On 19 June 2024, the United Nations General Assembly declared the year 2025 as the “International Year of Cooperatives”, which will be observed with the theme: “Cooperatives Build a Better World.”

Constitutional Status of Cooperatives in India:

  • Constitutional Status: By the 97th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2011
  • the following provisions were added:
  • Fundamental Rights: "Cooperative Societies" added in Article 19(1)(c)
  • Directive Principles: Article 43B added to promote cooperative societies
  • New Part IXB: Articles 243ZH to 243ZT added for cooperative governance

10 Years of Digital India Initiative

  • On 1st July 2025, the Digital India Initiative completed 10 years.
  • This flagship initiative was launched on 1st July 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the objective of transforming India into a digitally empowered and technologically advanced society.

Inauguration of ASEAN-India Cruise Dialogue

  • Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the first-ever ASEAN-India Cruise Dialogue on 30th June 2025 in Chennai.
  • The dialogue was held onboard the MV Empress at Chennai Port, with the participation of over 30 delegates from the ten ASEAN countries as well as Timor-Leste.

Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI)

  • The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) Limited has achieved a significant milestone by executing Power Sale Agreements (PSAs) for over 60 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity.
  • This capacity aligns with India’s energy transition policy, which aims to achieve the national target of 500 GW of renewable energy by the year 2030.

Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) Limited :

  • Founded: 20 September 2011, as a non-profit company (Sec 25), later became a commercial company in 2015
  • Headquarters: New Delhi
  • SECI granted Navratna status by Ministry of Finance on 30 August 2024

"RailOne" – Indian Railways' New Super App

  • On 1st July 2025, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched Indian Railways' new super app "RailOne" during the 40th Foundation Day celebration of CRIS (Centre for Railway Information Systems).
  • This app serves as a one-stop solution for all rail passenger services and is available on both Android Play Store and iOS App Store platforms.

Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4)

  • The Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) is being held from 30th June to 3rd July 2025 in Seville, Spain.
  • The objective of the conference is to facilitate global discussions on the challenges and opportunities related to financing for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  • Theme of the summit: “From FfD4 to Implementation: Harnessing the Potential of Private Capital for Sustainable Growth”
  • India to be led by: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman
  • During FfD4, Sitharaman will meet senior ministers from Germany, Peru and New Zealand and the President of the European Investment Bank (EIB)

Meeting of QUAD Foreign Ministers

  • The QUAD Foreign Ministers' Meeting was hosted by the United States on 1st July 2025 in Washington, D.C.
  • The meeting was attended by the Foreign Ministers of the four QUAD countries: India, the United States, Japan, and Australia.

QUAD:

  • Full name: Quadrilateral Security Dialogue
  • Member countries: India, US, Japan and Australia
  • Objective: To promote peace, stability and freedom in the Indo-Pacific region
  • Initial idea: During the 2004 tsunami relief cooperation
  • Formalized: In 2007 on the proposal of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe
  • Revived: During the ASEAN conference in Manila (Philippines) in 2017
  • First summit: March 2021 (virtual), in the presence of all four heads of state

‘Quad at Sea Ship Observer Mission’

  • For the first time, the Coast Guards of India, Japan, the United States, and Australia have launched the ‘Quad at Sea Ship Observer Mission’ to enhance maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • This historic multilateral initiative involves the deployment of two Coast Guard officers from each of the four QUAD countries, including female officers, aboard the USCGC Stratton, a United States Coast Guard vessel. They will jointly participate in maritime surveillance and security operations.

Rear Admiral V. Ganapathi

Economy and Banking

GNPA at Historic Low

  • According to the June 2025 Biannual Financial Stability Report (FSR) released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPA) of banks stood at 2.3% in March 2025, marking the lowest level in decades.
  • The RBI has projected that this rate may slightly rise to 2.5% by March 2027.

According to the report:

  • Banks' capital-to-risk weighted assets ratio (CRAR) has reached an all-time high of 17.3% by March 2025
  • India's economy will register a growth rate of 6.5% and 6.7% in 2026 and 2027, respectively

8 Years of GST in India

  • The Goods and Services Tax (GST) was introduced in India on 1st July 2017, and it has now completed 8 years of implementation.
  • It was presented in Parliament under the leadership of the then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, and was enacted under the 101st Constitutional Amendment Act, 2016.

Goods and Services Tax (GST):

  • Unified indirect tax system
  • Rates determined by: GST Council (Chairman: Union Finance Minister)
  • Four main slabs of rates: 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%
  • There are also three special rates: 3% on gold, silver, diamonds and jewellery, 1.5% on cut and polished diamonds and 0.25% on rough diamonds
  • Gross GST collections during 2024-25 reached Rs 22.08 lakh crore, an increase of 9.4% over the previous year
  • Number of active GST taxpayers increased to over 151 crore

National Doctors’ Day (India)

  • In India, National Doctors’ Day is observed every year on 1st July to honor the contribution, service, and dedication of doctors across the country.
  • The day also commemorates both the birth and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy — a renowned physician, freedom fighter, and former Chief Minister of West Bengal, who is considered one of the most respected doctors in Indian history.
