National News

Regional Workshop on Consumer Protection Organized in Chennai

  • A regional workshop on Consumer Protection in Southern States/Union Territories was organized in Chennai by the Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • According to Ms. Nidhi Khare, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, the National Consumer Helpline received 5.41 lakh complaints in 2025, out of which 23% originated from the southern states.

Organization of “Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Conference 2025”

  • The Department of Fisheries, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, organized the “Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Conference 2025” in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, with a focus on the development of inland fisheries and aquaculture.

Highlights of the conference:

  • The objective of the conference was focused on the development of inland fisheries and aquaculture.
  • Launched the reservoir fisheries cluster at Halali Dam.
  • Laid the foundation stone of various initiatives under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
  • Contribution of inland fisheries and aquaculture: More than 75%
  • 142% increase in inland fish production, now production: 147 lakh tonnes
  • Average annual growth rate: 9% (which is the highest among all agricultural sectors)

New Temperature Range for Air Conditioners in India

  • The Ministry of Power is considering making it mandatory for all new air conditioners (ACs) in India to operate only within the temperature range of 20°C to 28°C, with the objective of reducing energy consumption across the country.

Agreement Signed to Enable Seamless Digital Access to Credit Services

  • Maharashtra, Kerala, Bihar, and Odisha have signed agreements to enable seamless digital access to credit services through authentication linked to farmer registries.

  • Jeff Bezos, the founder and former CEO of Amazon, has relinquished the title of the world’s second richest person after eight years to Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle.
  • According to Forbes’ World’s Billionaires List, Larry Ellison added $26 billion to his net worth on June 12, 2025, taking his total wealth to $243 billion.

  • This loan is part of the Gujarat Skills Development Program, being implemented in collaboration with the Department of Labour, Skill Development and Employment of Gujarat and Kaushalya: The Skill University (KSU).

Emperor Penguins at Risk Due to Climate Change

  • Climate change is causing the rapid melting of sea ice in Antarctica, putting the Emperor Penguin species at serious risk of extinction.
  • Scientific studies and satellite image analyses have revealed a 22% decline in the Emperor Penguin population between 2009 and 2024 in a major region of Antarctica — a rate faster than previously projected by existing models.

Emperor Penguin:

  • The largest and heaviest penguin species found in Antarctica
  • It is famous for its height, weight, and unique adaptability to life in extremely cold environments.
  • Scientific name: Aptenodytes forsteri
  • Adult emperor penguins average 1.1 meters (about 3 feet 7 inches) to 1.2 meters (about 4 feet) tall and weigh 20 to 40 kilograms (35 kilograms on average)

  • According to the latest report by global job platform Indeed, India witnessed an 8.9% surge in job postings in May 2025, breaking an eight-month streak of continuous decline.
  • While the year-on-year figure is 1.8% lower, and still about 16% below its peak, job postings in India remain approximately 80% higher than pre-pandemic levels.
