National News

India-Central Asia Dialogue

  • The 4th India-Central Asia Dialogue was held in New Delhi on 6–7 June 2025.
  • In this dialogue, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar welcomed the Foreign Ministers of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

India-Central Asia Dialogue:

 

  • An annual ministerial forum established to strengthen multilateral cooperation between India and five Central Asian countries — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan

Other meetings:

  • First meeting (January 2019, Samarkand)
  • Second meeting (October 2020, Virtual)
  • Third meeting (December 2021, New Delhi)

 

 

Launch of UMEED Central Portal

  • Union Minister for Minority Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, launched the UMEED Central Portal in New Delhi.
  • This portal has been developed for Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development.

  • Objective: To make the registration, management, and administration of Waqf properties across the country transparent, digital, and effective.
  • Through the portal, the registration of all Waqf properties has been made mandatory within six months.
  • The registration process is divided into three levels – Makers, Checkers, and Approvers, with verification to be done through mobile and email ID.

11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum Held

  • The 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum was held in Brasília, the capital of Brazil, on 4–5 June 2025.
  • The Indian delegation was led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

  • Parliamentary delegations from all 10 BRICS member countries—India, Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Indonesia—participated in the forum.
  • Three partner countries—Cuba, Nigeria, and Belarus—also took part in the forum.
  • At the conclusion of the conference, it was decided that the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum would be hosted by India, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was formally handed over the chairmanship.

Number of Startups and Unicorns in India

  • According to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, by 2025, the number of registered startups in India has increased to 1.76 lakh (176,000), out of which 118 startups have become unicorns—i.e., their valuation is $1 billion or more.

Government Initiatives Behind the Growth:

 

 

  • Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY): More than 1.6 crore youth have been trained under this scheme.
  • Expansion in the Education Sector: 7 new IITs, 8 new IIMs, 16 new AIIMS, and around 490 new universities have been established.
  • Employment Generation: 1.6 lakh startups have created over 17.6 lakh direct employment opportunities.
  • Internship: Under the PM Internship Scheme, 1 crore youth have been given internship opportunities in top 500 companies.

India’s Progress in Reducing Extreme Poverty Over 11 Years

  • According to a World Bank report, India has made significant progress in reducing extreme poverty over the past 11 years.
  • In 2011–12, India’s extreme poverty rate was 27.1%, which declined to just 5.3% in 2022–23. During this period, around 269 million (26.9 crore) Indians moved out of poverty.

  • In 2011–12, around 344.47 million (34.4 crore) people were living in extreme poverty in India. By 2022–23, this number reduced to 75.24 million (7.5 crore).
  • Poverty levels are assessed using the international poverty line of $3.00 per day (at 2021 prices).
  • Key contributors to this reduction include: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh.
  • In 2011–12, these five states accounted for 65% of India’s extreme poor. They have now contributed to two-thirds of the reduction in poverty.

Eid-ul-Azha

  • Eid-ul-Azha, also known as Bakrid, Eid-ul-Juha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the major festivals of Islam. It is celebrated on the 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah (Zul-Hijjah), the 12th and final month of the Islamic calendar.
  • In the year 2025, the festival was observed on 7th June.

  • Major Festivals: Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Azha (Bakrid), Milad-un-Nabi

Defense News

INS Arnala

  • India’s first anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft, INS Arnala, will be inducted into the Indian Navy on 18 June 2025.
  • INS Arnala is the first in a series of 16 indigenous warships, jointly built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and L&T Shipbuilders.

Scholar Daji Panashikar

  • Renowned Marathi scholar, author, and Sanskrit expert Daji Panashikar passed away at the age of 92.
  • He authored several important works in Marathi and Sanskrit, and was also actively involved in teaching, lectures, and social work.

S. Mahendra Dev

  • Renowned economist S. Mahendra Dev has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM).
  • He took charge of the position on 5 June 2025 and resigned from the board of directors of Axis Bank as this is a full-time role.
