National News

Inauguration of Satna Airport

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated Satna Airport in Madhya Pradesh on 31st May 2025.
  • On this occasion, the first flight was also operated from the airport, in which six tribal women completed their first air journey from Satna to Rewa and back.

Related Facts:

  • Satna Airport has been constructed at a cost of ₹36.96 crore.
  • It includes a 1,200-meter-long runway and a 750 square meter terminal building.
  • The airport is suitable for the operation of 19-seater small aircraft, and currently, flights of this capacity are being operated.

Second Phase of Capacity Building under NAKSHA Programme

  • The Department of Land Resources (DoLR) under the Ministry of Rural Development will organize the second phase of capacity building under the NAKSHA programme starting from 2nd June 2025 at five Centers of Excellence (CoEs) across the country.

NAKSHA Programme:

  • Launched by: Department of Land Resources (DoLR), Ministry of Rural Development
  • Objective: To conduct a National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of urban housing areas. This aims to ensure the digitization of urban land records, along with transparency and efficient land management.
  • Launched in: February 2025 at Raisen, Madhya Pradesh, by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Axiom Mission 4 (AX-4)

  • India’s Union Minister for the Department of Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh, announced during a media briefing that Indian astronaut, Group Captain Subhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force, will conduct special scientific experiments related to food and nutrition aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Axiom Mission 4 (AX-4).

  • Astronaut: Group Captain Subhanshu Shukla is a veteran pilot of the Indian Air Force and has also been selected for ISRO’s Gaganyaan Mission.
  • Mission Date: Subhanshu Shukla will depart for the mission on 8th June 2025.
  • Significance: This mission represents a major scientific and technological milestone for India, advancing research on human nutrition and health in space.
  • Group Captain Subhanshu Shukla will become the second Indian astronaut to travel to space after 1984. He will carry out Indian scientific experiments on the ISS in collaboration with NASA and Axiom Space.

Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan 2025

  • The Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan 2025 was launched from Puri, Odisha, and will be conducted across more than 700 districts in the country until 12th June 2025.
  • This nationwide campaign aims to raise awareness among farmers about scientific and modern agricultural techniques, advanced seeds, balanced use of fertilizers, climate-resilient crop varieties, and effective crop management.

Key Highlights of the Campaign:

  • Objective: To directly reach approximately 1.5 crore (15 million) farmers.
  • Training: Around 3,100 agricultural scientists have been trained as Master Trainers to educate farmers on new agricultural practices.
  • Technical Support: Mobile Soil Testing Laboratories will help farmers assess the quality of their soil.
  • Collaboration: The campaign is being implemented with support from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, State Governments, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs).

'Ankur Initiative'

  • The Housing and Urban Development Department of the Odisha Government has launched the ‘ANKUR’ initiative, which stands for Atal Network for Knowledge, Urbanisation and Reforms.
  • The objective of this initiative is to promote resilient, smart, and inclusive urban development across the state.

India’s Foreign Exchange Reserves

  • India's foreign exchange reserves rose by a massive $6.99 billion to $692.72 billion in the week ended May 23, 2025, hitting a new all-time high.
  • According to weekly data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), foreign currency assets, a key component of the foreign exchange reserves, rose by $4.52 billion to $586.17 billion.

  • Gold reserves also increased by $2.37 billion to reach $83.58 billion.
  • India's reserves with Special Drawing Rights (SDR) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) also increased by $81 million and $30 million respectively.

Foreign Exchange Reserves:

  • Means: Assets held in reserve by a central bank in foreign currencies
  • Includes: Bank notes, deposits, bonds, treasury bills and other government securities

No Requirement to Maintain Minimum Balance – Canara Bank Update

  • Canara Bank has provided a major relief to its customers by removing the penalty rules related to non-maintenance of minimum balance.
  • Now, Savings Account holders are not required to maintain a minimum balance, and no additional charges or penalties will be levied for not doing so.
