ICRA (May 2025) Report: Estimation on Indian Aviation Sector

- According to the latest report by ICRA, India’s domestic aviation sector witnessed significant growth during the financial year 2025 (April 2024 – March 2025).
Key Highlights:
Domestic Air Passenger Growth:
- The total number of domestic air passengers in FY 2025 reached 165.4 million, marking a 7.6% year-on-year increase.
- This figure is 16.8% higher than the pre-COVID level of FY 2020 (141.5 million passengers).
International Air Passengers:
- Indian carriers handled 33.8 million international passengers in FY 2025.
- This represents a 14.1% year-on-year growth and a 49% increase over the pre-COVID level of 22.7 million.
Domestic Passenger Traffic (April 2025):
- In April 2025 alone, the estimated number of domestic passengers was 14.5 million, a 10.2% increase compared to April 2024.
- Airlines also reported a 6.9% year-on-year increase in capacity deployment during April 2025.
Passenger Load Factor (PLF) and Peak Travel:
- The domestic aviation industry recorded a robust 86% PLF in FY 2025, indicating strong demand and efficient airline operations.
- The highest single-day domestic air passenger traffic was recorded on 23 February 2025, with 535,343 passengers flying across India, driven largely by travel associated with the Mahakumbh event in Prayagraj.
Future Outlook:
- ICRA has maintained a stable outlook for FY 2026, with projected domestic passenger traffic growth in the range of 7-10%.
- This growth is expected to continue despite a high base and possible seasonal disruptions.
