Global Report on Food Crises 2025

  • The Global Report on Food Crises 2025 has been jointly released by the "Global Network Against Food Crises" (GNAFC). (The GNAFC is an international alliance comprising the European Union, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and other key institutions.)

Key Points:

  • This report provides detailed information on the severity of food crises, their main drivers, the state of nutrition crises, and the potential outlook for 2025.

According to the Report:

  • In 2024, 295 million people in 53 countries/territories were grappling with severe food crises.
  • This figure is 13.7 million higher than in 2023, indicating a continuous deterioration of the situation.
  • 22.6% of the analyzed population was in severe food crisis.
  • This figure has remained above 20% for the fifth consecutive year.

The Vicious Cycle of Conflict, Inflation, and Climate Crisis:

  • The world's most vulnerable populations are continuously trapped in a vicious cycle of conflict, inflation, climate crisis, and forced displacement. All these factors have exacerbated already fragile situations.
  • The conditions in regions like Gaza, Mali, Sudan, and Yemen are extremely concerning.
  • Famine has been confirmed in Sudan – the first time a country has declared famine since 2020.

Dire Picture of Malnutrition:

  • 38 million children (under 5 years of age) were found to be severely malnourished.
  • This data comes from 26 crisis-affected regions.

The Link Between Forced Displacement and Hunger:

  • Out of 128 million displaced people, 95 million are living in countries where food crises have deepened.
  • Affected countries include: Congo, Colombia, Sudan, Syria, etc.
  • War and violence have trapped 140 million people in hunger.
  • Nearly 140 million people in 20 countries are suffering from hunger due to war and violence.

The Impact of Economic Crisis and Inflation:

  • In 15 countries, 59.4 million people are trapped in food crises due to economic problems such as inflation and currency devaluation.
  • These figures are double compared to the pre-COVID era.

Climate Disaster: 96 Million People Affected by Drought and Floods:

  • In 18 countries, 96 million people are struggling with food crises due to the El Niño effect, drought, and floods.
  • Particularly affected regions: Southern Africa, South Asia, Horn of Africa.

This Level of Hunger is the Highest Since 2016:

  • The situation of 19 million people is so severe that they are on the brink of starvation.
  • This figure is the highest since the report's inception in 2016.

Declining Global Aid and Willpower:

  • The report warns that the possibility of improvement in 2025 is low.
  • The largest ever decline in funding for food and nutrition assistance has been recorded.
  • Ø António Guterres described the report as a "mirror to the world's inaction."
