First Global Media Dialogue (GMD)

  • The first-ever Global Media Dialogue (GMD) in India was held on 2nd May 2025 in Mumbai.
  • The event was organized under WAVES 2025 (World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit), hosted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs.

  • Major countries involved: United Kingdom, Japan, Russia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia
  • Objective: To promote international cooperation, share best practices in the media sector, discuss policy coordination, and capacity building

Inauguration of WAVES 2025

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai.
  • This four-day summit aims to position India as a global hub for media, entertainment, and digital innovation, with discussions on films, OTT, gaming, digital media, and artificial intelligence.

‘Depot Darpan’ Portal and Mobile Application

  • The Central Government announced the launch of the ‘Depot Darpan’ portal and mobile application on 20 May 2025.
  • This initiative aims to ensure quality and performance standards across 2,278 food storage depots in India, including those of FCI, CWC, and state agencies.

Caste-wise Census of Muslims

  • The Central Government has decided to conduct a caste-based census, which will also include castes within the Muslim community.
  • For the first time since independence, religion-wise along with caste-specific data will be collected at the national level.

Election Commission, Constitutional provisions:

  • Classification of Muslim castes: In the census, Muslims will be classified into castes like Sheikh, Syed, Pathan (upper caste) and Pasmanda (backward class)
  • Focus on Pasmanda Muslims: 80-85% of the Muslim population comes from the Pasmanda class, which is considered socio-economically backwardConstitutional position: The government has made it clear that reservation will not be given on the basis of religion, but policy adjustments are possible based on caste data.

  • India and the European Union (EU) have agreed to finalize the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of 2025.

Vizhinjam International Seaport Inaugurated

  • PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the ₹8,900 crore Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on May 2.
  • It is India’s first dedicated container transshipment port.

India’s GST Collection in April 2025

  • India’s GST collection rose by 12.6% to ₹2.37 lakh crore in April 2025, up from ₹2.10 lakh crore in April 2024 — the second highest monthly collection since GST’s implementation on July 1, 2017.

Important Days

World Tuna Day

  • World Tuna Day is celebrated every year on 2 May to highlight the importance of tuna in food security, economic development and marine biodiversity in the world.
  • The day was officially established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2016 and was first celebrated on 2 May 2017.
