Mon 04 Nov, 2024
Context
- An international team of scientists led by the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad, has discovered an exoplanet named ‘TOI-6651b’, outside our solar system. is five times bigger and 60 times heavier than the Earth.
Features:
- Five times bigger and 60 times heavier than the Earth.
- Location: 690 light years (distance travelled by light in 1 year) away from the Sun.
- Exoplanet: An exoplanet is a planet that orbits a star outside of our solar system.
- Planets of Solar System:
Mercury:
- Closest to the Sun
- Smallest planet
- Extremely hot surface during the day, extremely cold at night
- No atmosphere
- Covered in craters
Venus:
- Second closest to the Sun
- Hottest planet due to a runaway greenhouse effect
- Thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide
- Retrograde rotation (rotates clockwise)
- Often called Earth's "sister planet" due to similar size and density
Earth:
- Third planet from the Sun
- Only planet known to support life
- Abundant liquid water
- Significant atmosphere with oxygen
- Active geological processes (volcanoes, earthquakes)
Mars:
- Fourth planet from the Sun
- Cold, desert-like planet with a thin atmosphere
- Has two moons (Phobos and Deimos)
- Evidence of past water flow
- Large volcanoes, including Olympus Mons (the largest in the solar system)
Jupiter:
- Fifth planet from the Sun
- Largest planet in the solar system
- Mostly composed of hydrogen and helium
- Great Red Spot (a giant storm)
- Has many moons, including the largest moon in the solar system, Ganymede
Saturn:
- Sixth planet from the Sun
- Known for its prominent rings made of ice and rock particles
- Second-largest planet
- Mostly composed of hydrogen and helium
- Has many moons, including Titan (the only moon with a thick atmosphere)
Uranus:
- Seventh planet from the Sun
- Ice giant
- Rotates on its side
- Has a faint ring system
- Has many moons
Neptune:
- Eighth and farthest planet from the Sun
- Ice giant
- Strongest winds in the solar system
- Has a faint ring system
- Has many moons, including Triton (geologically active)
| Asteroids are rocky, airless objects that orbit the sun and are remnants from the formation of our solar system. The belt of Asteroid is located between Mars and Jupiter. |
