Khulan Conservation Day

  • Mongolia has designated October 25 as Khulan Conservation Day.
  • Day will be celebrated every year on October 25, to spotlight the Khulan as a keystone species in the Gobi-Steppe ecosystem.

About Khulan

Mongolian Wild Ass (Equus hemionus hemionus) is a member of the Equidae family which consists of horses, donkeys and zebras.  India is home to two cousins of the Khulan: The Kiang or Tibetan Wild Ass (Equus kiang) and the Ghudkhur or Indian Wild Ass (Equus hemionus khur).

Global Ecosystems Atlas

  • The Global Ecosystems Atlas, developed by the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) was launched at COP16 of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
  • This first-of-its-kind tool focuses on global ecosystem mapping and monitoring earth observation.

Sohrai Painting

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a Jharkhand Sohrai painting from Hazaribagh to Russian President Vladimir Putin at the recent BRICS summit in Kazan. Sohrai Paintings are recognized as One District One Product (ODOP) items.

Folk Paintings in India

  • Madhubani Painting: Traditional art of the Mithila region of Bihar.
  • Kalamkari Painting: Kalamkari is a painting done by Kalam (pen). These paintings are made in Andhra Pradesh.
  • Kalighat Painting: Kalighat painting is done with watercolour on mill-made paper primarily by scroll painters-cum-potters who had migrated from Bengal to the city of Kolkata.
  • Phad Painting: It is practised primarily in certain villages of Rajasthan.
  • Thangka Paintings: Tibetan Buddhist painting usually depicts a Buddhist deity or stories on cotton or silk. It is prevalent in Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Patachitra Painting: Traditional painting of Odisha dedicated to Lord Jagannath of Puri.
