Context

• Recently the much awaited International Purple Festival 2024 was inaugurated in Goa.

Objective

• The objective of the festival is to showcase the talents of persons with disabilities through attractive performances in music, dance and entertainment during the inaugural ceremony.

Key Points

• The festival was organised by the Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities in collaboration with the Directorate of Social Welfare, Government of Goa and the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.
• A standout moment of the inaugural ceremony was the rendition of the Purple Anthem titled 'Dhumal' which featured performances by PwDs from various walks of life in Goa as well as respected creators of the Indian music industry, symbolising inclusivity and unity.
• Various initiatives of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities as well as the Government of Goa were also launched in this International Purple Celebration.
• Purple Ambassadors: There are 22 respected ambassadors representing 21 types of disabilities listed under the RPWD Act, 2016 and spinal cord injury.
