Agreement between Government of India and ADB

Context

  • An important agreement of US $ 100 million was signed on 22 December between the Central Government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Objective

  • Its objective is to develop urban services and tourism facilities in the north-eastern state of Tripura.

Benefits of the project

  • Under this project, emphasis will be laid on development of municipal and public services in major national highways, urban local bodies besides major tourist destinations of Tripura.
  • This will help in developing Tripura as a gateway to North-East India.
  • The Asian Development Bank will strengthen the capacity of urban local bodies, recognizing the involvement of community and private sectors for climate change and disaster management, tourism and business.
  • Under this project, urban water supply will be further improved by installation of 42 kilometers of new transmission and distribution pipes, installation of four new water treatment plants and improvement of 55 kilometers of water pipes.
  • Under this project, 21 kilometers of urban roads will be built keeping in mind the needs of the elderly, women, children and persons with disabilities.
  • Additionally, in order to promote urban services, it will provide necessary skills for operation and maintenance of infrastructure, financial management, gender equality and social participation in 12 urban local bodies.
  • Under this project, famous tourist places like Chaturdash Devta Temple, Kasba Kalibari and Neermahal Palace will be renovated.
  • The accommodation arrangements in rooms with modern facilities will be improved and made tourist friendly.
  • Apart from this, a digital museum and a new adventure park will also be constructed.
