Context

  • The Prime Minister launched the Green Credit Initiative to reframe global environmental policies at the COP-28 climate conference.

 Key Points

  • In this, it has been proposed to give carbon credits to the general public apart from commercial initiatives.
  • This will increase participation of the general public regarding issues related to carbon emissions.

 Cop 28

  • COP28 Climate Summit will continue till 12 December.
  • In this, 167 leaders from around the world will discuss the issue of climate change and its solutions.

 Main agenda of COP 28 meeting

  • In the last few years, climate change has emerged as the biggest challenge for the entire world.
  • As a result, the focus of this meeting is to curb fossil fuels and carbon emissions.

 India's current and future position in terms of carbon emissions

  • It is noteworthy that India is moving towards achieving its National Determined Contribution  target.
  • Due to its serious efforts, India will achieve the emissions reduction target 11 years earlier and the non-mineral fuel target nine years earlier.
  • Its ambitious targets include reducing emissions by 30 percent by 2030 and increasing the share of non-mineral fuels to 50 percent by 2070 and achieving net zero emissions.

Conference of Parties (COP)

  • It is the supreme body of the UNFCCC conference.
  • Events: Every year
  • First meeting: March 1995 (in Berlin, Germany)
  • The tenure of the COP President is decided among 5 UN regional groupings namely - Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Central and Eastern Europe and Western Europe.
