Context :
- October 17 is celebrated every year as International Poverty Alleviation Day to draw attention to the global issue of poverty.
- The purpose of this day is to create awareness related to poverty and human rights violations of people depending on their financial and cultural background.
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2023: Theme
- According to the United Nations, the theme of this year's International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is “Decent work and social protection: putting dignity into practice for all."
International Poverty Alleviation Day History -
- In December 1992, the UN General Assembly declared that 17 October would be observed as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
International Poverty Eradication Day: Importance -
- This year marks the 31st anniversary of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
- Its objective is not only to respect the poor sections of the society but also to recognize their struggles.
- It is noteworthy that around the world, approximately 44 million people are currently living in poverty. In such a situation, this day is celebrated to express the seriousness of this issue and to get out of this vicious cycle.
Poverty situation in India -
- According to the national poverty line in 2011, about 21.9% of the population in India is below the poverty line.
- At present the poverty line is Rs 1,059.42 per month in rural areas and Rs 1,286 per month in urban areas.
- Poverty line in India is calculated by the Task Force of NITI Aayog on the basis of data obtained by the National Sample Survey Office under the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation.
