ASEAN-India Summit

  • The 20th ASEAN-India Summit and the 18th East Asia Summit are being hosted by Indonesia, the current chair of ASEAN, in Jakarta from 7 September.
  • The Prime Minister of India will participate in both the summits.
  • The theme of the ASEAN-India Summit this year is "ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth".                       
  • Under this conference, measures to further strengthen the East Asia Summit mechanism will be discussed as well as views will be shared on matters of regional and international interest.          

ASEAN

  • ASEAN is a regional organisation of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
  • This organisation was established in 1967 and its secretariat is in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.  
  • Founding countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.     
  • Under this, ten Southeast Asian countries are included, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
  • The ASEAN-India dialogue relations started with the establishment of sectoral partnership in 1992 which graduated to full dialogue partnership in December 1995 and summit level partnership in 2002. The ties were elevated to a strategic partnership in 2012.    
  • ASEAN focuses on promoting peace, security, economic development and cultural heritage in the Indo-Pacific region.   

 East Asia Summit            

  • The East Asia Summit is a forum led by key leaders in the Indo-Pacific.              
  • Since its establishment in 2005, it has played an important role in the strategic and geopolitical development of East Asia.
  • Apart from the 10 ASEAN member states, the East Asia Summit includes India, China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Russia.
  • India is a founding member of the East Asia Summit.
  • India views the EAS as a key platform for enhancing its Act East Policy and strengthening its strategic partnership with ASEAN and other regional countries.
