"Super blue moon"

Fri 01 Sep, 2023

  • On August 30, 2023, the sky was illuminated with a rare phenomenon, a super blue moon, with both a "blue moon" and a "super moon" event.
  • The last blue supermoon was in 2009, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the next is not expected until 2037.
  • 'Super Moon' is the situation when the Moon is closest to the Earth. It is also called Paris Full Moon. In this the moon appears 14% bigger and 30% brighter.

 Background

  • According to NASA, the term supermoon was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979.
  • When there are two full moons in a calendar month, the moon of the second full moon is called 'Blue Moon'.
  • Four consecutive total lunar eclipses (Lunar Tetrad) are termed as 'Blood Moon'.

Effect:

  • The moon's gravitational pull during a supermoon slightly affects tides, causing minor fluctuations in coastal high and low tides.
