Why in News?
- Recently the Supreme Court of India has directed the Archaeological Survey of India to conduct a detailed non-invasive survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

- The ASI, under the Ministry of Culture, is the premier organization for archaeological research and conservation of the country’s cultural heritage.
- The Archaeological Survey of India works under the Ministry of Culture.
- It also regulates the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972.
- It manages more than 3650 ancient monuments, archaeological sites and remains of national importance.
- Its activities include survey of archaeological remains, exploration and excavation of archaeological sites, conservation and maintenance of protected monuments, etc.
- In addition, it regulates all archaeological activities in the country as per the provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.
- It was established in the year 1861 by Alexander Cunningham, the first Director General of ASI. Alexander Cunningham is also known as the “Father of Indian Archaeology”.
- The carbon content can be measured to determine the age of the organic material.
