Why In News?
- Recently, Plastic Overshoot Day has been observed on Earth.
- It is that time of the year when the amount of plastic waste produced around the world exceeds the capacity of waste management systems.

- The Plastic Overshoot Day is determined on the basis of the country's Mismanaged Waste Index (MWI).
- The difference between waste management capacity and plastic consumption is known as MWI.
- The report identifies 12 countries responsible for 52% of the world's mismanaged plastic waste.
- These countries are China, Brazil, Indonesia, Thailand, Russia, Mexico, United States of America, Saudi Arabia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iran, Kazakhstan and India.
- The three countries with the highest mismanaged waste percentage include Mozambique (99.8%), Nigeria (99.44%) and Kenya (98.9%) in Africa.
- India ranks 4th in MWI with 98.55% waste.
- India's per capita consumption is 5.3 kg, which is much lower than the global average of 20.9 kg.
