Why In News ? 

  • Recently, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken a significant step by issuing the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Repeal Regulations, 2023.

Static 

  • The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India was established on 20 February 1997 by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997.
  • TRAI consists of a Chairman, two full-time members and two part-time members, who are appointed by the Government of India.
  • Regulating telecom services, including fixation/revision of tariffs for telecom services, which were earlier vested in the Central Government.
  • Ensuring transparency in quality of service and tariffs.
  • advising the government on policy matters and licensing issues
  • The recommendations of TRAI are not binding on the Central Government.
  • The TRAI Act was amended on 24 January 2000, which established a Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) to handle the judicial and dispute functions of TRAI.
