December 12, 2017

  • Chabahar Port is a seaport in Chabahar located in southeastern Iran, on the Gulf of Oman and at the mouth of Strait of Hormuz.

  • The first phase of the Chabahar port was inaugurated by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

  • The port allows India to bypass Pakistan and reach land-locked Afghanistan and Central Asian countries.

  • It is key to accessing the Central Asian markets for Indian goods.

  • In May 2016, India and Iran signed a bilateral agreement in which India would refurbish one of the berths at  port, and reconstruct a 600 meter long container handling facility at the port.

  • Being close to Afghanistan and the Central Asian countries of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan etc., it has been termed the "Golden Gate" to these land-locked countries.
