Public Procurement Portal for MSEs: MSME Sambandh

A Public Procurement Portal ‘MSME Sambandh’ was launched by Shri Giriraj Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises. The objective of the portal is to monitor the implementation of the Public Procurement from Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) by Central Public Sector Enterprises. MSME sector is the second most important sector for generating employment after the agricultural sector. This will help in achieving the objective of minimum 20% procurement of the products and services from MSEs annually.

A new form of matter: Excitonium

Researchers at the University of Illinois have announced the existence of a new form of matter called excitonium. This material is made up of a kind of boson, a composite particle that could allow the matter to act as a superfluid, superconductor, or even as an insulating electronic crystal. The hole is positively charged and the electron is negatively charged, so it is possible to create a bound state between the two, with the electron orbiting the hole, instead of falling back in. This bound state is the exciton, which is the building block of excitonium. There are five known states of matter: solids, liquids, gases, plasma and Bose-Einstein condensates.

India’s first-ever mobile food testing lab launched in Goa

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar launched country’s first-ever mobile food testing laboratory. The laboratory mounted on a bus will be travelling across the state checking food samples on the spot. The vehicle is equipped with milk analyser, hot plate, hot air oven, mixer grinder, digital weighing scale, digital multi-parameter, hand-held meter, power generator, air conditioner and refrigerator.

Vyas Samman 2017: Mamta Kalia

Renowned Hindi scholar and writer Mamta Kalia has been selected for Vyas Samman 2017 for her novel "Dukkham Sukkham". "Dukkham Sukkham" is a saga of three generations of a lower middle-class family. The Vyas Samman is a literary award in India, first awarded in 1991. It is awarded annually by the K.K. Birla Foundation. The award includes a monetary token of Rs.3.5 lakhs, a citation and a plaque. To be eligible for the award, the literary work must be in the Hindi language and should have been published in past 10 years.

India’s first energy-efficient railway station: Kacheguda

Kacheguda has become India's first energy efficient 'A1 Category' railway station of Indian Railways. Kacheguda railway station comes under the South Central Railway (SCR) Zone. The SCR describes the 100-year old Kacheguda railway station as one of three 'Pearls' of Hyderabad. It was built in the year 1916 by Mir Osman Ali Khan, the 7th Nizam of the Hyderabad State, in Gothic and Mughal style architecture. It replaced 1,312 conventional lights with light-emitting diode (LED) lighting. Around 370 ceiling fans too were replaced with Brushless DC Electrical (BLDC) motors energy efficient fans. 12 air conditioners were replaced with energy efficient inverter type air conditioners.

UNESCO recognized KUMBH MELA as Intangible Cultural Heritage

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has inscribed Kumbh Mela on its Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity during its 12th session being held at Jeju, South Korea from 4-9 December. With the inclusion, Kumbh Mela now joins the elements from Botswana, Colombia, Venezuela, Mongolia, Morocco, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates on the list. Intangible cultural heritage means the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills as well as the instruments, objects, artefacts and cultural spaces associated with them that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as a part of their cultural heritage.

The Wassenaar Arrangement: India admitted as member

The elite export control regime Wassenaar Arrangement (WA) decided to admit India as its new member at a two-day plenary meeting of the grouping in Vienna. India will become the Arrangement's 42nd participating state. India’s entry into the export control regime would enhance its credentials in the field of non-proliferation despite not being a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The WA membership is also expected to build up a strong case for India’s entry into the 48-member Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). China, which has been stonewalling India’s entry into the 48-nation NSG is not a member of the Wassenaar Arrangement. It is also not a member of MTCR. The Wassenaar Arrangem

Real Madrid and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo was named the winner of France Football's prestigious award at a ceremony in Paris. He has been awarded The Best FIFA Men's Player for 2017. The Ballon d'Or is an annual football award presented by France Football. He beated Lionel Messi.

Time magazine has named “The Silence Breakers” as its 2017 Person of the Year, recognizing the women (and some men) who came forward with stories of sexual harassment and assault and helped force a nationwide reckoning. Person of the Year is an annual issue of the United States news magazine Time that features and profiles a person, a group, an idea, or an object that "for better or for worse... has done the most to influence the events of the year".


The first international conference and exhibition on AYUSH and wellness systems, International Arogya 2017, was organized in Delhi from December 4-7, 2017. AYUSH is the acronym of the medical systems that are being practiced in India such as Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy. The event showcased the strength and scientific validation of traditional Indian systems of medicine in the global context.

Dinesh K Sarraf : New Chairman of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB)

The government has appointed Dinesh K Sarraf, former CMD of ONGC, as the new chairman of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB). The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) was constituted under The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board Act, 2006. PNGRB's job is to regulate the refining, transport and marketing of petroleum products as also to ensure enough supply across the country, protect consumer interest, foster fair trade and authorise companies that would build and operate fuel pipelines.

Petro : Cryptocurrency of Venezuela

Venezuela would launch a cryptocurrency to combat a financial blockade by the United States. A cryptocurrency is a digital asset designed to work as a medium of exchange that uses cryptography to secure its transactions, to control the creation of additional units, and to verify the transfer of assets. Cryptocurrencies typically are not backed by any government or central banks. Digital currency is a money balance recorded electronically on a stored-value card or other device. In 2008, bitcoin was introduced, which marked the start of Digital currencies.

Inauguration of Shahid Beheshti Port at Chabahar, Iran

Chabahar Port is a seaport in Chabahar located in southeastern Iran, on the Gulf of Oman and at the mouth of Strait of Hormuz. The first phase of the Chabahar port was inaugurated by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. The port allows India to bypass Pakistan and reach land-locked Afghanistan and Central Asian countries. It is key to accessing the Central Asian markets for Indian goods. In May 2016, India and Iran signed a bilateral agreement in which India would refurbish one of the berths at port, and reconstruct a 600 meter long container handling facility at the port. President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the 18th edition of the Hornbill Festival at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, Nagaland. It is also called the 'Festival of Festivals'. The aim of the festival is to revive and protect the rich culture of Nagaland and display its extravaganza and traditions. To encourage inter-tribal interaction and to promote cultural heritage of Nagaland, the Government of Nagaland organizes the Hornbill Festival every year in the first week of December. The first festival was held in 2000.
